Love this thread, love this site!!
Am new here.... gives me hope that my Viva can be saved.
I know you've all addressed this kind of question before, but what's the simplest/most straightforward engine swap I can go for? I've a 77 GLS Viva Estate... the engine's a bit tired, so was looking to upgrade.
Without doing anything dramatic to the car, what would be my engine choices here? Anyone?

A very easy swap is a ford crossflow. They bolt in very easily and look the part too. Biggest drama would be exhaust system needing to be swapped to other side but thats no a biggie if your going to replace it anyway.
Finding nice crossflow cheap is getting harder now though....

Where'd a Ford Crossflow come from - what car....? Crossflows will normally be found in Mk1/2 Escort's, Mk1 Capri's and Mk2 Cortina's but there is so many floating around that i suspect you will find one sat in a rough kit-car if you look around  Its a sound choice of motor sir, get it done! |

 Back where in NEEDS to be ;D Will get cracking on again next week....first order of business will be loosing the front wings and then trying the f/b ones on for size  Steve  |

Managed to spend an hour or two on the car today Got the windcreen out and took the LH front door off  This door is the worst of the four...  Needs the bottom corner cutting out and replacing and has a nasty dent at the front on the swage line. Also the window regulator is shot to pieces so will attempt to repair it but might have to go hunting for another  Didnt get to the wings as i hoped but that may have to wait until next weekend as i need to get some crucial measurements before i remove them More soon i hope Steve |

I really NEED to get some work done on this! Other than firing it up a couple of times i aint touched this since november but with a week off I'm trying to find time to get the front wings off, inner wings repaired and the f/b wings lined up and mounted along with trying to finish the n/s sill......id just be happy getting the wings off if I'm honest! Have been buying bits as and when i see them..... Pair of banded 13inch steels for testing:  Went to the Essex Swapmeet and picked up a couple of bits:   AND i've decided to can the turbo plans and use the bike throttle bodies i have here instead along with a dose of lightening and custom management...... Actual progress has been made! Started off with drilling out most of the spot welds along the top of the LH wing  And down the front  It started coming away but the a$$ end wouldnt come off without a fight.....so i got the grinder out ;D and off she came! Looked pretty good under there so started giving the inner wing a going over with the wire wheel  And then turned my attention to the front of the sill......the reason why the car has sat still since march last year!  The rust had tracked up the a-pillar to a point that i wouldnt be able to cover up the same way as i did the drivers side hence waiting to cut the whole wing off to get a better look at it I started cleaning it all up and began remaking the front of the sill only to run out of wire after only 30secs of welding   Seem to be finding it a real challenge getting momentum on this again which is really pi$$ing me off but I'm determined to get this to the Gathering this year......it may drive me to madness by the end though  ;D In other news..... Dez came through with another pair of banded steels to match the pair i got a few months ago so now have a complete set just need to get them all shot blasted and painted gloss black  Getting some more wire tomorrow and WILL make more progress tomorrow eve Steve |

Right well I sorted the wire and got on with the task of rebuilding the base of the A-pillar...  And seeing as i needed something to attach the front of the sill (the part you don't usually see with the wing on) I needed to address the large lump of holey curse word you can see so I cheated and cut the front off a repair sill I had to hand and put that on...  (this doesnt show it finished, still had to spotweld the lower edge) Followed by fabricating the front section...   But then it all went a bit wrong    As with the driver side, there is a funny pressed section that just loves to rot due to being in direct line of fire from all the curse word off the front wheel....that needed to go and be replaced with a flat plate BUT this side has had a repair patch on the leading edge of the floor that wasnt to my liking and would have made the repair to the side a pain so I cut out the repair patch and attempted to weld a piece back in.....this is where I'm still at now The metal is so rusty both inside and out that when i clean it back it just becomes so thin it refuses to weld but just blows holes thru instead(welder on lowest setting) so will need to keep cutting metal out till I find some thick enough to weld to......but I fear this may end up with me replacing most of the floorpan The possibility of this making the gathering is getting less and less each time I go out to the garage, I just don't have the patience to keep going.... Don't worry about any deadlines dude, just keep chipping away and it WILL get done. I've sections of the Cortina which I'm scared to takle for fear of the ever growing crusty hole  Good on ya for getting stuck in, what's done looks good. |

Youll get there. When welding new steel to old try little fillet welds it as if you are tig welding. A short blast starting on the new steel and move the weld pool into/onto the old steel then stop. And repeat. You'll be sort of blending the two together rather than just trying to add a bead. It might take more heat than you think when you start on the fresh steel. Get really comfy as well and relax. It's amazing how thin you can weld once you get a knack for it. I am guessing you have a self darkening helmet ? If not then get one- it transforms this style of welding. As your starting on thin rusty steel in the future when you go to weld nice clean thick steel it'll be such a breeze. Basically you'll be learning pretty quickly eh!
Its hard to weld what your doing. Ask a experianced heavy fabrication welder who is really proficient at welding hefty steel to do your job and they won't be any better unless they too have practiced at it too.

Thanks for the words chaps I had another crack at it the other night and have managed to get the plate in....ended up having to weld it both sides but its done now and just needs grinding back then i can continue upwards Pics poss later Steve |

Came home in a mood so buzzed some metal together....  Getting late so couldnt grind it back but only one hole left here so I'm happy Will get back on it tomorrow and start moving upward onto the upper section of the inner wing which needs some more metal letting in and then I can test fit the f/b wing  Also in other news I obtained another inlet manifold for the twink.....and did this to it  Need to order some ally pipe and work out just how much further back i need to trim then mock it up somehow not an easy job as taking the current manifold off either involves servo/master cyl removal, head off OR engine out! Told ya it was a tight fit ;D Laters Steve |

Awesome to see it getting some luurve man. It deserves it. You trying to get it ready for RRG 12? Thats the plan chap but I'm starting to realise I may have to be a bit more realistic with my plans so as much as i'd love to finally have this all in one colour that may have to wait until after the gathering as id rather just get it back on the road.....patchwork viva's still look cool |
