Interesting , About 8 months ago i recieved a fine from dvla saying i had not informed them of selling a vehicle , Wrote back to them saying i had sent the log book off and it was not my fault if they had not recieved it , told them i was not paying the fine and take me to court , Not heard anything since .

Online SORN has worked for me for years and years. Haven't read the article but both the cars retaxed immediately after between 5 and 15 years off the road  |

ive never had or heard anything about my white subaru in the 6 years ive had it......and its not been on the road for best part of 16 years now....
Methinks I'm goin to have trouble taxing it etc when it gets finished.....

They've tried the old sorn trick on me a couple of times, both times I politely told them to pee off, and that I wouldn't be bullied into paying the fines, that if they were really that bothered, they could come and fetch the cars (both scrapped). Both times I got a letter stating that they would not be pursuing the matter. Win |

Both times I got a letter stating that they would not be pursuing the matter. Win that doesnt work if you acctually want to put it back on the road i bought a car (my vxr viva) off my mate which was recently sorned signed log book over ectect then 2 months later i got a letter saying i owed them £80 be cause i was the new owner and it wasnt taxed bla bla bla bla balls i ened up paying it and being forced into sorning it ? (even tho it had 9 months sorn left ) and the sickning thing is it hasnt moved more that 20 yards its still in the same shed ffs |

to be fair, and where the DVLA is concerned thats difficult for most of us, the article in the Register (not the most balanced and unbiased jounal out there in the first place) is not an "official" criticism of SORN at all as the headline suggests.
What the interesting part of this is that judges are setting precident that the DVLA does not have the right to insist you have proof you notified them of any changes. This could be a change of address, change of keeper, etc but for various reasons of prejudice this seems to being tied to SORN by all who are reporting on it (based on the way el Reg has presented it)
This is a shame because the issue is far wider than SORN as it covers all notification to the DVLA and that is the thing worth noting.
However, the DVLA is getting pretty sharp at passing things over to balifs quicker than you can get them into court (potentially at your expense) to cease and desist. And some of the collection firms they use are nothing short of criminal. One case which mad the news a while ago was a collection agency the DVLA still use were phoning a guy up and threatening to do things to his school-kid daughter if he didn't pay up the money he owed (back tax on a car he didn't even own any more but the DVLA didn't care and just put it in the hands of the thugs)
So its not quite a victory yet.
Its a small step.
What is needed is an independantly monitored appeals process which has to be fully completed before the DVLA can instruct its mongrel dogs to come confiscate your assets while you are at work...

Ive been sent letters from DVLA threatening court action as they said i didnt inform them when i sold a car . . .Told them id sent it and its not my fault,not heard anymore for a month :-D

I've not had any problem with the online SORN business... but it does make me wonder about the system here- considering the number of vehicles the DMV has to deal with spread out across fifty states it manages to work out quite well. If you're pulling the vehicle off the road, you lose your plate- if it's not paid up or turned in then you get a fine. Once the plate is turned in the vehicle is considered unregistered and that's the end of it. The vehicle title takes care of the rest. If it's scrapped or broken for parts the title has to be updated. Works. If nothing changes, you just hold title to the thing and that's it, no more hassle. Let the vehicle rot into the undergrowth...
Putting it back on the road is reversal of that. Insure it, register it, get it tested. On the road again. Recurring $15 fee every year for a sticker on the plate, and $10 for the MoT equiv.

It's quite simple. When you buy a sorn'ed car just fill in a sorn declaration and stick it in the same envelope as the logbook. If there was a problem with the system then trust me I'd have found it.

the system here- considering the number of vehicles the DMV has to deal with spread out across fifty states it manages to work out quite well--Phil Phil, Weezianna has its own DMV. The other 49 states have their own BMV's or DMV's or whatever each of them choose to call it. There are a couple states that don't even issue titles for cars over a certain age - you just use a bill of sale. Each state is different and unto itself. There is no federal DMV in the USA, and I hope it stays that way.... [Insert here: My standard, UK Men of CarLove, get your nuggets active politically. And that doesn't mean reading a website for advice on how to comply.... good grief....] |

Jonny-sadly you cant do that. They will return the SORN dec, telling you it isn't registered to you - so you cant SORN it.
Realistically,you can't SORN it until you get the V5c back-acknowledging you as owner.
As that can currently take around 6 weeks(you do get a nice letter acknowledging the delay...) it then has to be sent immediately....

as soon as I buy any untaxed and sorned car now I sorn it online using the prevous owners details and then as soon as I get the log book into my name I sorn it online again.
I've never had any problems so far but the last car I bought had a 'missing' month because DVLA took that long to send the new V5 out.

Surely things would be made a lot easier by treating SORN the same as taxed - I.E the status stays the same when ownership changes?
What practical purpose does SORN actually fulfill?
