Ok, I've run into a bit of a problem. Plan to build up my Daimler and use her as a 'sensible family car' so I'd like to stick an oil burner under the bonnet. But I'd also like to find a suitable RWD deisel donar motor (Car or Van I don't know) I'd like old school withour ECU and not masses of power, 100bhp is plenty. I'm a tad strapped for cash so cost does count, can anyone suggest what I should look for? Must be RWD, perfer Auto, Cheap and ECU free. . . Thankyou, epic build thread will follow. . .

sounds an entirey pointless lot of work to me.
if youre gunna go to that effort, at least stick something worthwhile in. an 'old' rwd mechanical injection diesel will only do 30-35mpg at best, no matter what it is. and youll struggle to find one with 100hp unless its turboed.
you could stick a zetec in it and get more power(150hp-ish) better economy (40-45mpg) on fuel thats 5p a letre cheaper.

I see you point Dez, unfortunatly her indoors doesn't and I don't fancy a modern for our 'sensible family car' apparently it must be suitable, efficent, auto. Obviously I'd go for a V8, but this will also be our tow car for the Herald to the gathering so I kinda assumed derv would be better mpg wise, altho I'm welcome to be directed to suitable 4pot alternatives.

How about a detroit two-stroke V8 diesel. I don't know if it would be good on fuel, but it would make a hell of a good sound LOL .

You could just buy a 70s Merc 240D and have done with it all.

I'd probably go for a old merc e class diesel for the autobox, if you could go for a manual a 2.5 DI out of a transit would be cheap cheerfull and lug anything along alright with decent enough economy, trhe last one we had did 40mpg on a long slow run, but still managed low mid 30's in general use

nissan 2.8 diesel on a auto box, diahatsu fourtrack, not sure what auto though or old perkins 4.0l di as mentioned, autos can be found, normally ambulances or minibuses. mercedes 2.5 5cyl, or the vag sourced volvo 2.4 6cyl.
those are about it for sensible old school diesels. but i agree i'd prob go petrol. coudnt you just lpg what you got??

+1 for lpg, seems pointless to go through so much work to fit a diesel and not make it that economic

I can't match all your criteria with my offering Omega 2.5 TD (150 bhp) RWD - Check Auto - Check Cheap - Check ECU - Fail

forget the transit DI on modern fuel you will allways struggle to get more than high 20's in anything over a ton and a half and TBH unl;ess it's a turbo lump it's better suited to a van Zetec wont pull you want something with torque for a heavy motor not high revving BHP IMHO.

this isnt a big or heavy car. the stock motor was a 2.5L straight six producing only 70hp. its probably ony 1.5 ton all in.

Disco tdi? auto, 2.5, drives both ends... you could have a PTO on the front with a mechanical pedestrian masher..... Cheap as chips, runs on chip oil/diesel mix, cheap parts, moderately reliable, basic.
