Yup, thanks John! More filler primer. And also on the sills... Steve. P.S: Thor might not be the only 240 on my fleet fairly soon

Small update - a wing came up for sale on ebay this morning in Leeds, so i bought it straight away and collected this evening! Its a pattern part but its of fairly high quality with only minor corrections needed, and besides, these early wings are getting rare and beggars cant be choosers. Clearly need to get their labelling system more organized! Inside keyed and red oxide applied Collecting my doors next weekend Ste

More progress I sourced some doors, which i fetched from a friends in Lancaster - something rather funny about overtaking on country roads in a 20 year old polo with half a volvo 240 strapped to it! Hung on the car using a combination of hinges all from rear doors (therefore not worn). Not adjusted up yet obviously. The fourth (red) door came from another source so motivating seeing a complete car come together At the same time i also brought back a left wing. Its got a couple of rust spots but its certainly a useable wing. It also has a small dent to sort on the wheel arch lip. Also, polishing steve is back! The good thing about using these late doors is that the stainless trim has been protected by black paint since new. scrubbing with thinners brings it off to reveal lovely shiney stainless! I want to get this all stripped off before primer or paint because i don't want thinners near the new paint. More soon, Ste.

More progress... Got the doors stripped down and de-trimmed and started to align them My secondhand left wing had some rot around the bumper mounting hole. I made a repair section using a piece of non-rusty original Thor wing. I decided to bond it as its a low stress point (unless in an accident, at which point i have more important things to worry about) The rust cut out: New wing on the left, with rust cut out. Thor wing on the right and the cut out repair section in the middle having been bare metaled and joddled. All marked up and ready to bond in Bonded. applied rust converter to the right hand wing. All ground off (leaving the rust converter only in the pits), and sanded up And red oxide - i love this pic because i can visualise the orange paint from it! More soon, Steve

i enjoy following your thread but why bond panels like these in? you can do a decent weld and it probably wouldn't have taken much if any longer..

I enjoy following your thread but why bond panels like these in? you can do a decent weld and it probably wouldn't have taken much if any longer.. Steve and I prefer bonding for areas that are low stress. It avoids the risk of welding heat warping the metal, which can be quite a problem on thin exterior panels, and the bonded joint forms a complete seal, with no holes or air pockets, so it's likely to last longer. For similar reasons, quite a few car manufacturers (e.g BMW) use the 3m panel glue to attach quarter panels and the like. They also specify its use for approved accident repairs John

Bonding has somewhat of a reputation of being a bodge or a hastily made repair where the repairer didn't want to take the time to do it right... With the quality of products out there today this just isn't true anymore.
John has some compelling arguments as well. The only thing that I would be worried about is problems arising from temperature changes. Is a bonded repair going to react the same? I would be afraid that when applied as a patch like in this example it could be a point where paint could crack due to different expansion of the wing and it's patch...
In the bodyshop where my car is being worked on, they also use bonding agents, but I've never seen them use it on a patch to a panel, more on the structural side of repairs like bonding panels or stuctural members on.
I'll be welding all repairs as far as I now can judge.

I can see what John is saying and i wouldn't call it a bodge, but for me i would have to weld the panel in otherwise in my mind the wing is 2 pieces glued together where as if its welded the new metal is truly part of the wing.
As you say a manufacturer or bodyshop would use this technique but only for something like bonding an inner and outer arch lip together.

Next update... On my left wing there was a dent on the wheel arch that had previously been filled over rust, so killed two birds with one stone by cutting it out. Made a repair piece out of some old thor wheel arch, but no pic. Not fitted yet anyway. There was some rust on the rear corner cut out Starting to form a repair piece Welded in John kindly put some 2k primer on my left wing too when he was doing the 245 rear wings, seen here after i have applied stopper to dents and press marks. Back on the car with some red oxide applied over the bare metal again. Then decided to wax my engine bay for extra motivation! (not that i was lacking!) Back to the left wing - someone had previously damaged it and tried to panel beat this area of the wing: It was a complete mess with high points all over the place, so i bolted it up to the car and made it secure, and, err, bashed the curse word out of it! Back on the panel stand, pretty good shape now. Filler and some red oxide on some pits i had ground down. Getting there... and second go.... And right wing again - being a pattern panel, its not perfect and at the front of the waistline trim moulding the pressing is the wrong shape, so needs to be adjusted. Also the trim holes are in the wrong place (too high) so those will be filled and redrilled in the right place. Stopper applied. More soon! Steve

my parents had one of these in baby poo brown. CYY 784V
Volvo 244DL 2.1L with red velour interior and 3-speed auto. Us kids always hated it because at the time it was an embarassing car to be collected from school in.
It was also inherited from Grandfather!
Edit: just checked the records and it was last taxed April 1997 - we gave it to a friend and he brought it round to the house about 3 or 4 years after. Gearbox was severely slipping by then.
