My experience of working across Europe and beyond is that “normal” people are much the same wherever you are. Doesn’t matter whether you’re in the UK, Poland, Germany, Morocco or wherever, if you’re a lorry driver with a breakdown, you’ll end up dealing with the same kind of people, who’ll have the same kinds of attitudes and outlooks. Where we share experiences and interests, it’s unsurprising that other commonalities occur. Parents share eye rolling moments with other parents, “car guys” share anecdotes, common ground is actually way more common than conflict. Where people disagree is, in my experience, most often around things that they don’t actually know much about, and instead of being able to relate with direct experience, they rely on third party sources that are pushing agendas whose end goals they wouldn’t agree with if they were clearer.
I’ve had a puncture fixed by a man in Romania that opened up his garage in the middle of the night to do it, and then resisted all attempts to pay him. I’ve had a mechanic in Germany go home and take parts off his own lorry to get me going again. I’ve had similar experiences all over the place. Communication in hand signals, sketches and broken scraps of English, German, Spanish, French or whatever else we have in common.
We are all way more alike than we are different.

There’s been zero progress on the Bantam front, other than a bit more fettling of Finlay’s D3. I painted the chainguard and we fitted it. Colour is way off really, but it’ll do. I’ve also picked up the right style of toolbox and battery carrier for it. The toolbox was, in my mind, a ridiculously expensive £130, but I simultaneously sold an early one for £125, so I guess if I look at it as having cost me a fiver to get where I needed to be then that’s ok. I’ve had no luck with sealing the leaky seams on the old tank I stripped, so I gave up on that and sanded the one that came with the bike. As suspected, the primer concealed a big dent and some filler, so it’s just going to get a quick blow over as a temporary job; I’m still keeping an eye out for a decent unrestored tank
I’ve done nothing with my D1, beyond a couple of brief rides. The carburation is way off, and I haven’t been able to find an unworn replacement body. All the ones I have are similar degrees of knackered. I think I’m going to fit a modern Dellorto and be done with it. I did ride over to Canterbury on it one afternoon in August, and dropped in on my dad’s mate Harry, who was instrumental in getting me riding the bike when I was a schoolboy.
My D3 project has not progressed one iota. I’m drowning in “things that need doing”, and am now of the mindset that it’s genuinely unlikely that I’ll ever get around to actually doing it. It’s more of a liability than anything else, and I have way too much money tied up in it, not to mention the space it takes up spread around the garage in bits. I’ve been helping a mate with his late 4-speed Bantam too, and it’s apparent that some 4-speed engine parts are really hard to find, really expensive, and that the trials and racing boys pay eye-watering amounts for complete engines. So I’ve decided to part with the whole thing. I doubt that I’ll see the best return selling it complete, so I’ll be breaking it down and selling it piecemeal.

It’s been an uneventful few months… both in terms of getting anything done, and also with regards to anything else dropping off. However. Whilst driving to work the other day, it became apparent that there was something amiss yet again in the braking department. First push of the pedal almost to the floor and not much retardation, second push and all as it should be. Hmmmmm 🤨 This behaviour is normally indicative of brakes being way out of adjustment after lots of miles. Except that I haven’t done lots of miles; and it came on suddenly, not gradually like it would do from wear… So, after a few days of driving around the issue hoping it would cure itself, I decided to get underneath and see if I could work it out. Front brakes’ adjusters all ok, but the nearside rear had one that was just spinning. Well, that seemed like the best place to start… The adjusters are simple snail cams, and it’s not uncommon for them to fall off the end of their shafts, and that’s what I was expecting to find. Wheel off, drum off, and no, adjuster is fine, but the shoe has slid off it and the return springs have fully compressed the piston back into the cylinder. How’s that happened? Well, the muppet that fitted them (yours truly), had put one of the return springs on the wrong side of the shoes. So instead of pulling the shoes back against the backplate, it was pulling it away. Doh. Anyway. An easy fix, and a reminder that none of us is exempt from making simple mistakes, no matter how familiar we are with our equipment. With the offending spring reoriented, I thought it best to check the offside and, yes, I’d made the same mistake there too. 🙄 As the Land-Rover was sat there with the rear wheels off, I thought I’d take the opportunity to do another little job I’d been putting off. I have what are known as “Wolf” wheels on the wagon, which are heavy duty 6.5J tubeless ones, and they have a thicker nave (the bit in the middle) than standard ones. This means having to use longer wheel studs. The longer wheel studs are actually about 6-7mm longer than they need to be, and they poke out of the nuts quite a bit. This irks me. I have thought about shortening the studs, but removing, turning down and then replacing 20 of them doesn’t appeal. And it would be madness really, even by my own standards. 🤣 So I have just put up with it for years. Anyway, I have a friend that works at a laser cutting company, who offered to cut me some spacers if I gave him the dimensions. Earlier this year I finally got around to doing that, and these were the result: Four perfect discs/spacers in 6mm mild steel. They bring the wheels out just the right amount. Still inside the arches though, which is good. 👍 I did have a minor moment thinking that they were too thick, but it was actually that some of my wheel nuts were slightly thicker than the rest. A rumble through the stores turned out enough to get them all matching. We will have to wait and see whether a 12mm extra track makes any noticeable impact on high speed handling… somehow I doubt that I’ll detect any difference. 🤣 The only other thing I have had to do this week was to put the batteries on charge. All the short runs I do are obviously not enough for the alternator to keep up with charging them both. I might investigate higher output alternatives when I finally get around to revisiting the whole alternator/power steering pump mounting issue, but it’s probably just as easy to whack the charger on from time to time..

I would love to be able to work to this kind of standard. Sadly, I just can’t get past the fact that our climate (and my unwillingness to maintain things at that level afterwards) means that I just admire from a distance. My Land-Rover is a mobile scrap pile by comparison.

where is the "don't like" button ? Yeah, I much prefer the "before" to the "after"... Just because you can, doesn't always mean you should...

Jeez. You really made a good job of that. 😮
Glad to see that you’re going to be ok. Cars are only tin, they can be replaced.

I had an otherwise perfect crank in a Land-Rover 200tdi engine that had run with a loose front pulley and trashed the keyway and the end of the crank where the pulley sat. Cost to have it repaired was somewhere around £500 in specialist engineering and machining. Cost of a brand new quality crank was £350. From that I deduced it’s only really worth considering if replacement cranks are either completely unobtainable, or you’re looking at a seriously high value vehicle with parts prices to match.

Only this one from when I got the remains out. It was pretty mangled, and the lock/barrel bit was long gone. No numbers at all. 90s Renaults used the same style Valeo switch it seems, so maybe that’s worth a search. The electrical part of the switch appears to be still in one piece, so now I have a battery I’ll see if I can work out what the terminals are actually doing. If needs be, I’ll try and source some appropriate plugs to suit whatever switch actually is available, and either fit them to the existing harness, or make a jumper lead to connect one to the other.

Meant to post these pictures of the plugs on the ignition switch. They look like generic aftermarket ones to me, rather than OEM; do they ring bells with anyone?

Well, after a few days on charger I unhooked the battery to see if it would hold its charge and, sadly, the answer was no. Within a couple of hours it’d dropped to 7v, so that’s been consigned to the scrap pile. I’ve picked up a new replacement via eBay for £30 delivered though, so not too much of a problem.
I’m still waiting for the belts I ordered from the Dutch supplier back in August. They’re not answering my emails, and I am going to make another attempt at contacting them to find out what’s happening over the weekend.
Bathroom is slowly progressing though, so that’s something at least. 😉

You have my sympathy. Nothing worse than taking a great deal of time and care on a build, only to be caught out by the unexpected. Still, at least you have found a definitive cause.

Went to the Oh So Retro show today. Really good spread of stuff there, from the utterly awesome to the “hmmm, well, it takes all sorts I suppose…” Saw this old junker parked up and spoke briefly with the owner, who’s obviously not quite all there… 😃👍👍

You know the answer I suspect, James. If you paint that body colour it will stick out like the balls on a dog. This ☝️ Coat of black paint and you’ll either be able to see it clear as day, or you’ll be able to call it a day. It’s when reading stuff like this I realise why I smoke around in my scruffy old Land-Rover. Like you, the perfection rabbit hole is too easy for me to fall down.
