I was at Ipswich in 1975 and I can still remember the mixture of fascination, disbelief and horror when this took place. As the commentator says, the Spedeworth venues allowed Joe Public out to do a couple of fast laps in those days. I was seriously tempted to try my luck at Cowdenbeath, but always bottled out. Poor bus service and too far to walk home, otherwise I woulda shown them!! Enjoy:

Definitely more of a spectator sport - Let's just leave this huge car on the corner ...... Love the fact someone brought along a rolls royce! Works even better with the benny hill music - youtubedoubler.com/4dIK

For most of the 90's the classic saloon car racing at Brands was Bob Sherring in his white 60's Galaxie vs Anglias, Cortinas, Minis and Imps biting at its tail. It was WELL worth going to see at the weekend, particularly because throughout my teenage years I don't remember ever paying for a ticket at Brands. We'd usually turn up in classics or my Dad's Cobra, park in the public carpark near the front and then nobody would ask us to buy a ticket as we walked in. So bizarre

I can also remember the run what ya brung at skegness stockcar track, they only did it for 1 year as i remember, there was a very rapid white escort with full cage at one point.

Here is 1971's championship Part 1 Part 2 oh yeah forgot about that ok let me rephrase. mini vs mustang on an oval track. I'm only used to seeing bangers on that track not fully road legal cars racing each other. haha

They used to do this sort of thing back in the day on the shale at our local speedway (Heddon Greta Speedway - before my time unfortunately!)
A super sedan driver I used to crew for told me about one night when a fellow in athen new e49 Charger (300hp, 4.3L straight six on triple webbers!) decided to have a go and stuck it backwards into the wall. Expensive night at the roundy rounds that must have been!

That bringsback memories ! They used to hold a spectator race fairly regularly at Shamrock Park in Portadown in the 70's. I remember one bloke in a Mk1 Capri who won it regularly. I also remember someone racing a beautiful metallic gold Mk2 Cortina 1600E, and dropping the rear quarter into the wall. Oops. It seemed too flash a car for the young driver : something struck me that it might be his dad's car. "Fascination, disbelief and horror" : you got that right.
