The first product ever released to the public by Alpine electronics it was called the electro gyrocator and was a joint project by alpine and Honda, i believe it was designed as a optional extra for the Honda prelude costing around $3000 back in 1981 not quite sure how it works compared to today's satnav, anyone know? some pics.......

That is awesome!
How to replicate on a much smaller budget:
1. Buy broken satnav off ebay, the cheaper, the better.
2. Remove screen and innards.
3. Glue page from AA street map where screen used to be.
4. Blame satnav when you get lost.

I've still got a Garmin 12 and Psion 5 with maping software and joining leads as my first Satnav.

That's bonkers You could probably buy at least three entire accords for that money now ;D ...and I hate to be contrary, but surely the world's first satnav, albeit not for sale to the public, was Q-branch's one as featured on Jamessh Bondssh Assshton?

Thats a really cunning way of working out positioning, I was wondering how they got around the built in inaccuracy that the satalites used to broadcast to stop you using them for weapons aiming! Anybody else remember the big fuss at the time when this was turned off?

IAs per link it wasn't satellite GPS based, just gyroscope based to use car movement to estimate position movement from your starting point. You'd have problems finding 3 good Accords from that era! Replica or Bond style navigation in an older car would be the ultimate accessory! The more chrome & black crackle the better!
