P.S anyone got a glt rear anti-roll bar? I noticed it wasnt there and assumed that it would be because it had self levelling, but on removing the wheels it appears it has had standard replacements in the past. Steve Nice work so far dude, love these old busses and they seem to last so well when looked after. As for your rear anti-roll bar, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've heard from numerous sources that they handle better without the rear one fitted. Cheers, yeah they do - thats why i love em! With regards to the ARB, I'm afraid you are wrong on that one!

I cleaned up the look of the front end of the car - clear lenses fitted, headlights rebuilt with new reflectors (the nuts came straight off the back! a rarity on a 240!) and the daft headlight wipers removed Couldnt resist giving it a (very!) quick polish! I'm out tomorrow night on a friends 21st birthday, but this weekend should hopefully see a refitted interior and 4 matching virgos instead of the mismatched wheels. Steve

With regards to the ARB, I'm afraid you are wrong on that one! Must just be when they are lowered then, which in turn would make sense. Not driven a stock one for years so can't really comment. Only that butterz's lowered one drives lovely for what it is. But to each their own.

Right, update! Got the repairs all painted up and the interior refitted. Photos will follow once its cleaned. All the central locking and electric windows now work As does the cigarette lighter, much to Wills delight! done the fusebox clean up. Also sprayed battery terminal grease after Decided to reward my hard work with some motivational (but still productive!) things this weekend. My original grille had 3 of its 5 clips broken and would have fallen straight off on the first emergency stop, so in return for lending him my early style spoiler, john has lent me his egg crate grille (shamelessly copying from Antz here...) Stipped the outer surround off it and keyed up the chrome surface with 240 wet paper. Worked well. Sprayed it with several thin layers of red oxide. Evidence that i do masking occasionally! Outer surround Inner part painted and re-assembled Obviously this grille would originally be from a car with a flat front, so would not have sat flush with the front edge of the bonnet, so i made these little brackets out of plastic. Plastic worked well because they point slightly downwards and they sort of grip the grille in a spring loaded way to help secure it tightly. I could have put it on with cable ties quite easily but I'm no bodger! Fitted! Looks awesome! It even makes the front end look flatter because the bottom edge sits in flush with the headlights, creating a continuous line from side to side I intend to fit galaxies to the car, and also we wanted to get some photos of the two grey GLTs together before Johns goes to its new owner so I cleaned the car down properly. Got all the tar spots off (took me an hour! Must have been parked next to roadworks or something) and gave it a polish Borrowed two of johns galaxies... Two grilles compared Obviously the galaxies had to return to Johns car so I went to my storage garage and dug out my old (ex-Thor) virgos. Two needed refurbishing again so I did that. And fitted to the car.... Looks reasonable and far better than the mismatching wheels but i can barely wait to refurb my own galaxies and get them on. Car is starting to look saweeeeeet! I'm dead chuffed! Maintainance jobs to start tomorrow night! Ste

Nice work mate!! At first I wasn't to fond of your grille work, but the end result speaks for itself. Looks great!! Guess I'm a bit weird, but I like the virgos you have on now better than the Galaxies....

Some more to report. Pulled out the stupid cold start valve flappy thingy and its pipe and capped off the hole with an aersol lid and some carbond Stripped down the relavant parts to do the breather. Thanks to Paul for the guide! Breather was gunked up as expected Changed the plugs - old ones indicate it is in reasonable health Here is where progress slows down Stripped the front end of the engine bay down to do the timing belt. It would appear that, at some stage in the past, for whatever reason, the car has had later style round tooth sprockets fitted. I'm baffled as to why. I know they increase the service interval up to 90,000 rather than 48,000 miles, but it still seems a bit daft. Anyway, needless to say my new belt wont fit. So job abandoned.

Yes, I'm mad, but hey I got my cambelt fitted in about ten minutes Tried to fix the cambelt cover, which did seem to work initially but then the cambelt was rubbing it slightly and when i undid the bolts to reposition it the lugs came off again, so it was relocated to the bin. The top cover isnt really necessary anyway, but ill replace it when i see one available cheap. Cambelt done...I had a bit of a tricky situation where someone had got the aux shaft timing way out and must have taken the distributor out and turned it a few teeth to compensate, so i put the belt on with the marks aligned, which meant the distributor would have been pointing at halfway between cyl 1 and 2, so i pulled it out and repositioned it to be pointing at cyl 1 with the engine at TDC. I need to check the timing but my strobe light seems to have gone walkabouts....Ill borrow one if needs be. This is how every household should look! Painted the radiator/airbox brackets. Pressed plates arrived Cleaned up the engine bay, lots! Painted my GT braces satin black and fitted them Also fitted a new dizzy cap and fuel filter, which was rediculously too tight and took two people, various clamps and grips and a hammer to get off! And on top of all that i have fixed a few niggles, cleaned the car out from all the mess/tools/parts and vacced it and conditioned the leather. Fixed the passenger window which was binding inside the door. MOT soon! Steve

I forget what a gorgeous colour John's car is! Looks good mate. I probably have a top cover available, if you want. It might have the letters "FK" after it, though cheers James

(copied over from volvo forums, figured someone on here may have some helpful advice too)
Right, my new 240GLT (B230E, k-jet) has a starting issue.
When it turns over, it fires but only for a second or two and you cant catch it on the throttle or anything to keep it going.
I have just replaced the fuel filter but I'm not sure its connected - the problem seemed to be apparent but not as bad before i did this.
One thing to bear in mind is that obviously its damn cold out there.
It seems to have a good spark and when it does fire, it seems strong and like it wants to run, but isnt getting enough fuel.
The car has stood a year with not much fuel in it, it now has fuel, probably about a tenners worth in the tank which should be plenty for starting the car
To me, it seems like 4 possible likely problems:
1) Cold start injector not functioning - was starting up okay before without it but now wont start because of the extreme cold? Or simply just faulted?
2) Dirt in fuel lines picked up from bottom of tank?
3) Similarly, blocked gauze/filter sock on the sender unit?
4) (Are there two pumps on my car?) One pump not working therefore not enough fuel pressure?
I have done the obvious things like fuel pump relay (I put a new one in when i got the car just to be on the safe side) and also tried the (still good) original one again. Also cleaned the fuses again.
Also, should I be able to hear the fuel pump on ignition or only when the engine is cranking. I can hear it when cranking and have heard it prime a couple of times when i have turned the ignition on, but not always.
So, any ideas?
Steve

I know there have been no updates lately, its because ive been doing small odd jobs/boring stuff and been too tired to do an update when i get in late! Basically the interior is all nicely put back together now. Got a couple of little niggles still to sort but they are low priority. I cleaned up the number plate lights - lenses and terminals, put some new bulbs in. Those are nice and bright now. I got slightly further with the running issues - we decided that although the fuel tank definitely was not empty, it wouldnt harm to put in some extra fuel to help things out and eliminate one more potential problem. Funnily enough the car did start after putting the fuel in, but a bit reluctantly. Since then it has started, but it tends to still do the "fire but only for 2 seconds" thing a couple of times before it then properly starts with the aid of a bit of throttle. I think both the fuel pumps are working - the main pump is definitely working but is noisy, and I'm pretty sure i can hear the in tank pump whirring away when i put my ear to the boot floor above the sender unit. It could be the main pump is inefficient (being noisy) or otherwise i wondered if there was a non-return valve that is maybe not functioning? Also slightly inclined to think some more fuel and an "italian tune up" may help matters as the car is running a bit lumpy at the moment anyway. I have also been hard at doing the brakes and tightening up the wheel bearings as they had some slight play in them but nothing serious. I did the N/S/F one last thursday night, and it was fine to do. Needed the usual filing down and cleaning and regreasing, but everything came apart fine. However when it came to the other side it was a different story - one of the pins took two hours to remove with a combination of big hammers and different drifts. Got it done eventually though. Chopped the pointless rusty backplates off. Have now started on the rears, which were also a curse word to take apart, and when i eventually got the caliper off and went to take the disc off, this happened.... So new handbrake shoes are on order! Cleaned up, de-glazed and repainted the rear discs... Rear calipers painted. More tonight - collecting parts later to rebuild rear brakes. Steve

Right then, bit of an overdue update. Finished off the brakes. Bled them through using Kirans easibleed kit (thanks matey!) so that plenty of fresh fluid came through, meaning they had a good flush out. Followed the instructions in the haynes with regards to bleeding sequence, which is important on 240s. Pedal is like a block of wood now. Refitted a few last bits of interior trim, fitted a new rear seat belt buckle (i broke one when refitting the rear seat) and..... ....took it for its MOT on Monday night. Passed with flying colours, no advisories, not even any comments from the tester apart from him complementing my welding Emissions were 0.15 out of an allowed 3.50 and 25 out of an allowed 1500! (i forget the units) Pretty good for an old bus! After a bloody farse with getting it taxed i eventually got to drive it on tuesday night, and the polo has been parked up ready for work for selling it. God its good to be back where i belong! In a 240! Driving it, first impressions are.... 1) By christ its high - I'm used to driving a 40mm lowered polo! 2) it definitely needs a rear anti-roll bar and stiffer rear springs. It doesnt have them at the mo' because originally it would have had self levelling which would not have included an anti roll bar, but they have been replaced with standard boge items, and the ARB and standard (stiffer) springs not replaced. If anyone has two of these clips, and the coachbolt that holds the arb to the clip - i need some! I have an ARB though. 3) slight front suspension knock. Likely to be lower arm rear bush. not urgent though 4) My grille has chips on it already despite being keyed up well Might have to go down the plastidip route like Antz did. 5) Engine mounts feel soft. 6) Its awesome beyond beleif! Ill clean it and try and get some photos at the weekend. Steve

Assume you've sorted the fuel issue? The MOT would say so.
On an old Volvo I had for a short time here, the in-tank pump got lazy so the high pressure pump was doing all the work They get very noisy very quickly when asked to do this, so replaced both and problem solved.

You got it spot on, although i havent actually replaced the in tank pump yet, just keeping it above 1/4 full
