Another pic after machine polishing the bonnet (I seem to be spending far too much time here....!) Also got fed up of listening to the damn curse word radio (adverts and curse word chart music does my head in) so i just had to give in and swap the kenwood in from the polo. I was going to go the CR905 + changer route, but that would be more expensive and actually less ideal and the only real up side was that it looks more original. Kenwood it is. Fitted 940 light up window switches (Kiran - percy lives on!). Slightly pointless upgrade but i did the other day wind the rear drivers side window down rather than the drivers one because i couldnt see the switches, so i suppose they are useful, and they are a nicer design, looking like a window switch rather than just a universal switch from a catalogue. (By the way, its clean now ) Ste

Bit of an update.... 240 is going well, I'm loving driving it and it makes me grin every time i walk out of the front door at work and see it sat there with so much more awesomeness than all the astras and fiestas I will be converting it to LPG very soon, so i want to make sure the engine and injection system are in good order before interfering with it, to make potential fault finding easier. Typical lumpy 240 idle. WD40 sprayed round the injectors and inlet manifold area revealed that (as expected) the injector seals were leaking. Flat and hard seals: Cleaned up the mating surfaces on the head. New seals Now runs much much smoother, and no vacuum leaks. Also welded in a lambda nut in the downpipe so that i can use johns AFR gauge and set up the mixture. A picture on a facebook group made me decide to paint the insides of my headlamps black, which i think makes the car look much better, although the corner clusters seemed too bright then, so some thinners on the less important reflective surfaces darkened them down a bit (be very careful doing this because wherever the thinners touches, the chrome will fall off) Finally, a photo from today where i cleaned and waxed the car and dressed the tyres and trims Steve P.S. galaxies being sandblasted as i type and tyres are sorted

update I bought a V90 spoiler from Kiran. I needed the washer jet hole filling and the ends trimming down a few millimetres. Fitting is still a work in progress but here it is being painted body colour by yours truly.... Bad news though... Driving up the M62 on Tuesday i had a trail of oil smoke behind me. Arrived at johns to find the underside soaked in oil and the oil level not even measuring on the dipstick. Cleaned all the oil off and topped it up and started the engine - it was obviously coming from the back of the head where the blanking plug is for where a 700/900 would have the distributor - a common leak point. BUT, with the mirror and a light and the engine running, i would see the camshaft spinning around! the plug had come out completely! Very lucky that i don't have a seized engine if I'm honest! Luckily i found a spare, and after removing the valve cover and the rearmost bearing cap, i fitted the new plug easy peasy in less than an hour and had it leak free again Although a slightly frightening experience, it made me grin a lot - 240s are sooooo easy to work on. If that had been my polo it would have blown several seals, the engine would have to come out to fit it, it would need a press to fit it and the engine would have probably seized! I also discovered that the 240 likes to hold on to its departed components ! (more later) My galaxys are back from blasting and have been etched and filler primed with stopper applied where necessary. I have also obtained 4 Michelins for them The front suspension was knocking and i took an educated guess that it was the rearmost lower arm bushes. I don't want to start polybushing things yet, so as a temporary measure I have fitted my ex Thor known good bushes. As they came off an early model, they have volvos stupid mister softee bushes with holes drilled in them. I filled these with carbond to stiffen them up. The bushes were absolutely fine anyway, so this is only to stiffen them, which may or may not work. The suspension knock has now gone and the steering and general front end movement feels more precise, so a job worth doing. more soon

Managed to bag myself a fairly rare GLT grille badge, which i quite like. Poser shot... And was also after an R-sport steering wheel, and decided to do an ebay search for used momo steering wheels for something period correct. Came across this which is very similar to some r sport wheels i have seen, but cost me £25 instead of £250. The intention is also that it will end up being Thor's steering wheel, making it ideal that it is slightly oversized and therefore suitable for a non-PAS car. I'm going to sort an r-sport centre for it. Ten points to whoever can guess what car it came on originally. NO CHEATING!

Right then, update! Ive had the garage to myself this weekend, so....down to business! My roof had epic lacquer peel - the whole roof was like this: I decided i was going to sort that this weekend! Firstly, filling a dent.... Then, hours upon hours of sanding with 120 grit and a block..... Until this - all the faulty lacquer and basecoat removed and down to the original volvo primer: The scuttle panel also required some attention - the screen is rusty in places, but at the moment while the car is my daily, its just having a holding repair as I havent the time to be removing the windscreen and welding in repairs. Once Thor is finished and I have the use of that instead, I will be converting to the early scuttle and flat bonnet, so proper welded in repairs will be carried out at that point. I ground down all rust spots. 98% of the rust pits came out. Some red oxide: Primer - I used 2k filler primer darkened down with some black basecoat to make it a fairly dark grey, which makes for easier coverage when applying the basecoat later on. Masked! Then the flatting marathon - 12 hours of flatting, shaping and correcting to get it ready for topcoat. I used 800 grit on a block where possible, and used a filler scraper as my block for difficult to reach areas such as the drip rail. Painted.... Upon closer inspection this morning after getting it out of the garage.... I'm bloody knackered but I'm bloody pleased! Steve.

i really like this car and it looks like you've made a superb job of the paintwork, however there seems to be too many pics of you spraying without a mask creeping in for my liking... once that sh*t gets in your lungs it ain't coming out be carefull!!

Yeah I know, i always remember to wear a mask when basecoating/lacquering, bit admittedly i sometimes forget when doing the primering.

Mega-awesome update today! Ive had the week off work and Nick has been to stay, so 3 volvo nutters together for a week can only lead to one thing - cars becoming far more awesome Flatted and painted my galaxies.... Tyres fitted and balanced and on the car Me and John went to pick Nick up in convoy - they sit so well together. This picture also compared johns lowered (-40mm) 245 with my standard GLT (-15mm than a DL or GL). Looking at this very picture later on in the pub, i decided the next pint can wait, and proceeded to buy my lowering springs! Whilst they were on their way, i had an issue to deal with. My drivers door hinge seemed like it was dropping very badly due to hinge pin wear, but on closer inspection it was actually the A-pillar that had rusted and therefore fatigued the metal and cracked it - very close to snapping off altogether! Door off, metal cut out. Repair section made out of thicker steel. Welded in and ground down and some zinc primer. I had to put the door on at this point to go out but there is also an extra strengthening plate inside and i'll tidy it up a bit and paint it in due course. Lowering springs fitted and a quick wash...Also fitted new steering rack boots too as they were torn. Celebratory drive to a well known pub... Saturday saw a trip to Antz's house, so see progress on his 255 and a blast in the oh-so-lovelyyyyyy escort. Some moving shots... And after a mega-detailing (thanks to Nick for helping ) (note epic photobomb by my uncle!) Also sorted a few niggles. Adjusted the handbrake up, replaced a faulty locking solenoid amongst other things Really, really loving this car right now. Just need to get my LPG kit on it now! (oh and maybe some polybushes and new engine mounts ) Steve
