Hi folks, I haven't been on here for a while, but I'm back, from outer space! Basically over the past few years i've had midgets like this: and this: now, I love these cars, but my fun per £ seems to be very low! and i literally spend 95% of my time under the bonnet! So I'm thinking about selling up and getting into more modern retro cars, and the most obvious substitute to a midget is a mk1 MX5 i reckon. But I don't often see ones which don't look either mundane and old mannish or chavved up to the max. What do people think: is a mk1 mx5 cool or not? has anyone seen any tastefully modded ones? any pics?

All the ones I've seen have either belonged to women or sad old single men who couldn't get laid in a brothel. Get a Stag or a TR....

I vote KOOL. Ignore the doubters and those who imply to own one you must be limp of wrist. It's a proper 'british' sports car will all the turd bits taken away. RWD, pokey, wind in your hair. What's not to like? I'd have one over a stag, TR or MG any day. Lotus Elan (on which the MX5 is clearly modelled) would be the only thing I'd take over it. With the oldest examples being 18 yrs old now, they are deffo in 'the book'

I love them. Fantastic little car, a little under powered but only because the chassis can easily cope with the power that is available. A bit too small inside for me to use regularly or for long distances otherwise I would probably have one

mk1s are there and set. must be coupled with hoops and/or cage though, and preferably a macho colour like racing white, racing green, racing black, racing blue... etc

What's not to like? I'd have one over a stag, TR or MG any day. Nicely put there... especially the "all the turd bits taken away." MX5's are such a cracking drive, I managed to convince a mates dad to let me take his one out for a rapid drive, and hell, what a car. Sure, they look a bit poncy in stock form, but add suitable rims (Konig Rewinds please!)and bash the snot out of it with "the stick" and you're onto a winner. Maybe not retro (I have issues with considering such an epitome of "organic" type car design falling into retro category), but definitely ice cool cars.

I drove one and found it utterly dull. I've driven an early MGB and found it much more fun!
Granted, I didn't get to push either hard but then I don't really drive that way anyway.

That black one is pretty sweet seth! Not too sure about the m1stang... I'm thinking something pretty subtle modding wise if I got one. Nice colour, as low as possible, on some Rims that you don't see them on very often. E.g. Ronal Turbos if I could get them to fit....

here's one I photchopped earlier (well, just a minute ago) I really should be doing some work instead of photoshopping wheels onto an MX5!

My middle-aged mum is on her second But drive one and all that, and similar limp-wristed plums will be forgotten. I would have one over a Midget - and I say that as a fellow Midget owner

'79 MG Midget 1500 - Still patiently awaiting attention '02 Vauxhall Astra 1.8 Elegance(!) - Better than you might think '03 Mazda MX5 - All new and shiny looking (thanks to Antony at Rust Republic) '09 Renault Clio - Needs to go.

SWMBO and I had an MX-5 Icon (I think....purple one with horrible cream leather but the 1.8 and 6-speed ) from our local Ford/Mazda dealer for an afternoon when she was looking to replace her old Puma with one, I thought it was a fabulous drive, but (dare I say it) the Puma- a 1.7 Lux- would absolutely annihilate it IMHO. So she bought a 1400 Fiesta. Women, eh??? :S

Bit unfair, totally different cars - one a big GT, the other a small roadster! ;D I'd rather have a decent (emphasis on the decent) Stag over one any day, just an infinitely more attractive a more engaging car (all strictly IHMO tho! Don't think I could be cajoled into owning any MG really..just a personal thing.

There is also MineRemember that the Midgets and the like also suffered from the same crappy comments, but it's just that we have forgotten about it. I would love to own a proper classic (not a B though) but I don't have the facilities to keep one, so a cheapy Eunos is perfect.
