Bstardchild - What a great car to learn to drive in! Why did they make you remove the BIS badge on PDI? It was a great car to learn in although the standing joke at the time was did I have one for the other foot (webasto sunroof) I don't remember the exact details but I remember it was an instruction from fiat GB

i used to see a BIS on my paper round every day back in the 80s, always fancied a 126 as a first car. at the time it was almost considered "exotic" compared to the 300 quid minis that my friends were titting around in. never had a mini or a BIS in the end, but the thought was there anyway lol. still like the look of them.

Messerschmitt - Did your 126 pass? I really hope so. Well it's update time for my little BIS but unfortunately it's bad news this time. We've gone two steps forward but taken three backwards. Firstly I looked closely at the sill on the offside rear as it appeared a bit crusty. So with a bit of poking around revealed a nasty little surprise. However it's not that bad in reality and should be an easy repair. Then I found a slight problem with the offside track rod end which the rubber boot was split. Which is a massive shame as I know that is now an MOT fail. Then it was on to the cooling system which needed addressing. This was the water outlet on the top of the lump complete with crusty build up around all the outlets. A theme to be continued. Then it was time to look at the thermostat and housing as so many people were warning me of the problems they can cause. So I removed the housing from the water pump. To all those that gave me the warning, I say to you 'THANK YOU' as look at the below pictures which will show you all the crud and curse word build up. So I'm left with a growing list of work on the old BIS but I'd rather get it right first time than have to go back at a later date. Thanks for looking and updates to follow.

A nice little car in good condition. The word Fiat used to be a synonym for rust. That looks a bit like Thetford where you picked it up from but a few places out east probably look similar?

Mine passed its MoT - ;-)
advisory on wheel bearing and on rear brakes at limit of adjustment. But my garage knows it'll be back in for the work, so she is road legal for another thirteen months.
Cooling system was well flushed on mine last year and she had her carb rebuilt. TIming is 99% there but needs a final adjustment.

Düdo - Thanks buddy, to be honest a repair panel is £18 and if that's the only rott that's in the car then I'm really lucky. The car was collected from Fakenham so not too far from Thetford. It was always around that way as it was originally bought from a dealership in Ipswich.
Messerschmitt - That's great news mate. I bet you're well chuffed to have another year of use. I can't wait to be able to use mine on the road.

So another update and unfortunately I've found some more problems! I cleaned up all the limescale crud and anti freeze from around the housings. However this left me with some further problems as you can see below. Thermostat housing. It's pourus and the aluminium has corroded through all over it. More rott and corrosion on the temperature sender housing. So unfortunately they are fit for the scrap pile, I've managed to find the thermostat housing online but not the temperature sender housing. Next it was on to the air filter housing. I rubbed them all down to clean them up. Then it was on with a layer of high build primer. I also did the undertray too. Then it was back to the car itself. I wanted to tackle the fuel lines as they needed some tidying and replacing. So firstly I removed the feed and return lines from the fuel pump. Next it was time to replace this line from the pump to the carb. It's far too long anyway so it will be good to replace it. Then I took off the top radiator hose for inspection and I am very glad I did! Here it is on the bench and I found some damage. Here is a close up view of the hose, it's been rubbing on the ancillary and was almost rubbed clean through the hose. So that's all going to have to be replaced to do the job properly. Thanks all for looking and as ever all comments appreciated.

Looks great! I love this car. I recently had a couple of cast aluminum pieces from my Vauxhall that had been exposed to the elements for years. A wire wheel in my cordless drill cleaned them up magnificantly. Much better than I could have expected. Worth a try

Look on allegro.pl for parts. Google translate is really helpful. in the early days while restoring I spent days on the telephone searching for parts , now it's only a mouseclick away.... happy times! stuey used a great paint on his engineblock. Looked marvellous. it's worth to read his thread through , and maybe he has a spare thermostat for you.

Jpsmit - Thanks buddy, usually I'm all for renovation but these are really pourrus. It might not be clear from the pics but they're full of holes. The aluminium has literally been eaten away.
Dikkehemaworst - These little cars really do seem to be all the rage in Poland don't they! I'm going to have a look at Stueys thread now, thank you.

Darrenh + Bstardchild - I have seen antifreeze do this before when it's not been circulated. Bearing in mind the engine had not been run for 9 years where it was parked in the garage. I will definitely be giving the cooling system a thorough flushing and inspection since i've already found issues with it.
Messerscmitt - Cheers pal! Great find.

Fiat126vdlaan.nl and fiat500shop.nl are the cheapest, but they work with a and b ( or even less ) qualities. But all my tuning stuff comes from allegro. Homegrown polish build tuningstuff is excellent. Checked my workshop today but i do not have and engine related stuff from a bis anymore. I use the bis crank , pushrods , flywheel and clutch as a base for my 800cc aircooled engines. But i do not want to build anymore. I want to drive and enjoy more and do rolling resto's.

Messerschmitt + Dikkehemaworst - I've looked through them all and I'm really struggling to find the aluminium housing that the temp sensor screws in to. Looks like that one could be tough.
