Ok BIS fans, it's update time. So you may remember I found that nasty little hole in the offside sill at the rear. I managed to find a brand new replacement outer sill very cheap. So that was ordered. So first job was to mark up the area of crusty metal to cut out. Then it was out with the cutting disc on the angle grinder and out came the offending area. So at first I was slightly worried with the inner sill as it looked a little crusty. However once I ran the grinding wheel over the inner sill I was happy that there was literally only one little rusty pin hole on the inner sill. I didn't have my belt sander to fully clean the inner sill but I am happy with the metal beneath. So next is to use my belt sander on the inner sill. Then cut out the repair panel from the new sill and weld it in place. So you also may remember that I wanted to replace the fuel pipes as they were aged, tired and crusty. So I got out my 6mm diameter braided fuel line and finishers. A brand new Wix inline fuel filter for that original look. I am planning on cleaning the block up a bit more to make it look more presentable. I'd love to paint it ideally but I don't really want to take the engine out. As always, thank you for looking and all comments appreciated.

Are you sure not oulling the engune out? It's such a simple job and so easy to do on these cars. It's on the floor in under 20 minutes. Refitting with care can also be achieved within 45 minutes. Great to see the car gets some love and attention. Do you guys get the lancia y10 first generation over there? I think it's the same engine for the thermostat housing.

Dikkehemaworst - You raise a really valid point! I think I'm almost pretty much there now anyway. I think there's only a couple of minor things to remove and then she's out. So I may well just bite the bullet! So time for another small little update. I got myself a belt sander and cleaned up the area indside the cill on the inner sill. It cleaned up really well and I was pleased that all the rott has been removed. Next here is the replacement new panel I mentioned in my previous post. Really good quality and very reasonably priced. So then it was a massive shame to have to cut it up but I marked up the sill and cut out the area that I'm going to need to repair the hole. I didn't get chance to cut it down to size but you get the idea. So as usual thanks for looking and all comments greatly appreciated.

Great read so far. Nice to see one surviving relatively rust free. Always liked the looks of these and seems like a nice little restoration. Look forward to more

Are you also a member of the club126forum? There are several Bis owners tinkering with old metal and breaking several. 126 blackbird onthe forum just bought another one with a car in spares. Worth 2 check them out. And it's a nice bunch of guys. Very friendly and sharing knowledge.

Bibbles - Thanks mate, I'm enjoying building the little BIS. I'm happy that you're enjoying following it. Dikkehemaworst - I have signed up to there now yes. I'm still finding my feet. So it's time for an update, I decided that since Dikkehemaworst had made a valid point about the engine. I had a good look at what was actually holding it in there and noticed it was very little. So now the engine bay looks like this! The missing piece which is now out and ready for a freshen up. Next I decided that I was going to replace the driver side track rod end that had seen better days. I managed to get a new replacement for very reasonable price. Then I cracked the nut from the old one that has the split boot. I also noticed that the grease nipples on the kingpins needed a good clean and re-grease. Which I will do as one of my next jobs. It was on with the new one and rebuilding it back together. Thanks for looking and as usual all comments about the little BIS are welcome.

Ok, So time for another update. I decided to take my tools to the engine. First thing I found a problem with is the alternator. I'm not even sure it is the right one for a BIS. I found this as the bottom bolt. I don't think that big washer is meant to be there. Also lets take a closer look at that bolt shall we. The big washer has been ground down to fit against the block. The nut on the end has been welded to turn a piece of thread in to a bolt. This clearly isn't OEM. Next up the starter motor was whipped off. So then I took off the gearbox as it was only a few bolts and nuts. This was caked in grease and grime. Since the gearbox is off I might as well have a look at the clutch as I haven't had chance to drive the car up to speed I don't know if it's any good or not. I don't want to put it all back together to find that it slips at speed. Then I got my de-greaser out and cleaned up the gearbox and bell housing, it came out quite nicely actually. Then it was time to take off the inlet and carburettor. I have a bit of an issue here that I'm hoping for some advice from you members. Here's the carb off. I have a problem with the choke butterflies, as you can see here I've closed them with my thumb. However the rod from the linkage doesn't seem to be connected and doesn't operate them. I can't see how it should be connected at this moment in time either. Here's the rod that I'm talking about that my thumb is on. It flops around at the top end and should surely be connected to the choke flaps. Plus this seal is split around the carb as you can see. Off came the exhaust system. All my nuts, bolts and fastenings separated and sorted. (Sad I know) The finished article all pretty much stripped down and ready for degreasing and paint. As always all comments welcome and appreciated.

Everything in the engine compartment does a permanent harlemshake. Everything falls or shears of eventually even the copper inlet and outlet pipes of the carb , where the fuellines attach to , shake out and puke fuel all over a hot exhaust. You probably have the same carb as a panda 30 , so an extended rebuild kit is not that expensive from leo van der laan. You can get all the parts also seperately like oversized butterfly assemblies etc. The dynamo is not attached with that specific bold , but its a good copy. And if it works ... great to see you're enjoying the build. There such lovely and forgiving straightforward cars , and once you've beaten the rust , enjoy with every outting. Keep up the good work , and keep reminding me i have to go to the garage more often.... i really have to build my Bis pick-up

Oh , and i used race glace on my old engine. An aluminium glace i found in a motorcycleshop. It works ok , albeit a little dull from the beginning , but i loved the paint stuey used on his bis engine..

Nothing 'sad' about sorting and labelling bolts, it's so easy to loose one or forget which ones went where. The engine will look so much better all cleaned and painted before refitting. Keep going, great work so far.

Dikkehemaworst - Thanks mate, I'm guessing the alternator may have shook itself loose at some point and the bolt lost or sheared. I'm still trying to find the 'Stuey' build thread so I can see that block paint you mention.
Mk2polo bloke - Thanks mate, I've always been a bit organised when I work on vehicles. When I took the wiring loom out of my Cosworth for the rebuild, every plug and wire had a tag on it telling me where it went.

Stueys thread is here : retrorides.proboards.com/thread/36587/It's a super read and his vision on the bis is gorgeous. The paint is silver plasticote project paint. He does it all with the paint. Gearbox , engine etc. Keep up the good work !

Ok time for another little update. The gearbox was leaking quite a substantial amount of oil from the driveshaft seals. I stripped the old seals off from the shafts. I had intended to remove the driveshafts themselves until I realised the strip down involved in removing them. So here's the stripped down outputs. The seals didn't seem to give me an idea as to why they were leaking, it makes me wonder whether they habitually leak? The flanges and sealing rings all cleaned up. I also gave the exhaust silencer a coat of heat proof silver paint and the brackets a coat of black. Also the inside of the drivers door looks like this around the top. It's all chipped the paint. I can only assume it's from the clasp on the seat belt buckle being thrown off when undone. Then the clasp has been striking the door. All comments appreciated and welcomed. Thanks for looking.

Are the seals the right size? The fiat 500 shafts are half a milimeter thinner , they get mixed up easily. Keep up momemtum! Love the read.

I can't add anything technical to the post but I though Id write to comment and say that I'm enjoying reading this, my grandad had a BIS years ago, it was in blue and he used to take me and my cousin out in it, I can remember after one such day on the way home, we had to pull up and my grandad had to beg a milk bottle full of water to top up the radiator because it was getting hot - I think it's common that these can overheat if the cooling system isn't in tip top condition. I can also remember him getting a speeding ticket in it, he was going 35 in a 30 zone, he was convinced the police man thought it was a motorbike because of the engine note and that he expected him to be going faster.
It's great to see that a few have been saved, not long ago they were just disposable cheap cars! One of these is defiantly on my want list, although I don't know if I would be able to drive one as my legs are a little long,

Dikkehemaworst - Cheers mate, I don't know if they are 500 seals to be honest. I'll certainly look into it off the back of that info. Fuldatramp - Thank you for your comments mate, it's great to hear stuff like that and know that it's bringing back some memories for you. Gives me that little bit more motivation knowing how much people enjoy reading about them. It is a great little car and your are the Nth person to mention the overheating so I'm thinking of running her without the thermostat completely. I'm 6ft4 and I can just about fit in the little BIS. Can't believe he got caught speeding in a BIS!!!
