Entertaining the remote possibility that all these cars weren't fragged years ago when the scrap price was through the roof... why should they only be offered to young people? It says it would help them "get on the road" as a first car - the MOTs these cars had when they were traded in expired years ago, and they've been sat rotting on an airfield since then. If young people want a classic car project, eBay and the car forums are full of them. There are more classic cars than there are people to restore them, and now the scrap price has sunk they can be picked up really cheap.
How come the internet has suddenly become obsessed with some cars that were traded in 6 years ago?

I read on another forum recently that someone local to the site confirmed that a lot of the cars are still there.

Unless they've had bits removed since, i'm surprised some of them had the MOT that was necessary when trading in under the scrappage scheme, ones missing a door for a start!

There are still many of these cars about - but for how long? ?

I was ready to skim read this thread, shrug my shoulders, shake my head and move on. However, with the photographic evidence that there are still masses of cars at the site, it begs the question why? The government have subsidised each and every one of the cars on the site and I assume they are now paying an enormous bill for storage and security. All the number plates appear to have been removed from the vehicles and I guess CODs have been applied to all. For the love of all things good though, why are they still sat there?

This again, give it up, you ain't going to get them back. Too true. We can all agree the scrapage scheme was a travesty but we don't need to keep depressing ourselves over it. Here...have a photo of an airfield full of nice cars instead.

It's a shame that a lot of these cars are sitting there. What was the deal, trade in a 10+ year old car with valid tax and mot and get £1000 off? I can't remember exactly now, it was a while ago.
I don't agree with the young or new driver part of the petition, how many 16/17 year old have the time, money and skills to resurrect any of these?
Government should auction them all off. I'd bid on a few.

It's a sad sight but remember these cars were given up by "Non-Car" people mostly. Then again even a BGT back then would have been owned by an enthusiast.

Aren't these the ones that they have decided are worth holding on to?
Also where are all the rest of the generic car fodder like the ford Ka's, corsa's, etc A friend scrapped her rusty ford KA for a new bmw mini on the scheme.

In 6 years though some of the 80s cars have now become classics, ie the 205GTi's which ten years ago were still banger prices and often seen in breakers yards. but as a car person i'd still like to add to afew to my collection even if it is into double figures already so I hope they escape the bailer. I've signed the petition although i think they should be avalible to all.

The main frustration here is the waste. Regardless of age, rarity, condition... it's the wastefulness of seeing all these vehicles held in limbo. There will be some reason that they're stored in the way they are and some reason that on this site you see many older vehicles together.
The whole scrappage scheme was a widely publicised fiasco, with a brittle veneer of environmentalism applied at some point. How much it did energise sales of new cars and a reduction of polluting bangers we'll likely never know, but the above pictures are only a tiny segment of the number of cars that went through the scheme.
As has been mentioned earlier in the thread, cars like the above are still available if you look for them and you don't always have to look that hard. If people really want a project, they can be got, some even have a noble tale of rescue available too.

Before we all grab our pitchforks and flaming torches, do we actually know who owns these cars now? I mean are they actually government property still (i.e. ours) or were they sold on to some enterprising third party who's holding on to the stuff for their own reasons.
Were all these vehicles part of the scrappage scheme? The lawn tractor suggests otherwise to me unless someone was operating a real con back there. If memory serves correctly didn't the cars to be scrapped have to be over 10 years old? Some of the vehicles there don't look old enough for that. (the vans for a start)
Whatever the truth of it all most of these would be parts donors now at best.

Hi, RAF Thurleigh is used by manufacturers to store surplus stock ie the vans.
