In part of an argument over a meme (yes, I am that guy) I discovered that a then-current (2022?) MINI Clubman Cooper was wider, taller and heavier than a 1968 Plymouth Fury... The Fury is longer. We are comparing a British "small" car with an American full size there. Now that is genuinely interesting, as performance wise the MINI is also in the same ballpark, the fastest variants being 0-60 in 6.1 just like the SuperCommando 440 Fury will. So much for 55 years of 'progress'!

Golfs
It also depends if you compare the original 1600 GTI MK1 or the Later 1800 - and go like for like keeping out of the turbo nutter power race period that ensued. Its a comparison that may have held some credence until the MK5.
Today the GTI is the base of a range of GTI options rather than the optimum of the Golf range it once was. The GTI no longer being "the" performance model of the range, you could argue that the comparison should now be with the R - 2023 R is capable of 0-60 in under 4 seconds and over 170mph!

Then there's the current F56 Mini compared to the R50/R53 original new Mini.

Although I can forgive the F56, because the hot ones are a lot quicker than the R50. You're at least getting something in return for the bulk.
Plus it means someone my size can actually get into it, something I sadly cannot do on the original which is a huge shame because I'd love one.

I was surprised at these 2, the Mini was a 2011 R56 so not exactly small to start with. Dispite the 4wd on the Yaris it only weigh's 50kg more than the Mini though!

I was in traffic last weekend, and there was a Rover P6 in front of a current model Golf. I was quite surprised to see that the Rover was lower and narrower.

The thing I don't get is cars keep getting bigger (a current Polo is about the size of a Mk3 Golf) but then manufacturers keep introducing smaller cars like the Up! to slot in the range below these (previously) 'small' cars. Why? Just keep the Polo small, the Golf a bit bigger, Passat a bit bigger still, and then you don't need more models. Or if you do need more models, put them at the top of the range.

Sadly tiny city cars - I love 'em - are a dying breed, with very few A segment cars left now and less each year. With more and more folk renting cars on PCP instead of buying them the sticker price is less important than the monthly payment, and there is less incentive for buyers on a budget to go so small. Pug/Cit have given up on them, the VW Group triplets are very elderly and won't be replaced when they are killed off, ditto the Korean Kia/Hyundai offerings, Ford and Vauxhall long since gave up bothering. Market forces are killing the small car, just as environmental concerns make them more relevant than ever. Shame.

That's a shame. I recently had a Citroen C1 hire car for a couple of weeks while my daily was in dry dock for an insurance job, and I quite liked it, despite it being very un-retro. The change in the VED rules must have affected the popularity of this sort of thing as new cars if it costs as much to run a medium sized car as a small one, but ironically I think it must be artificially propping up the value of pre 2017 models that fit into the sub £30 tax brackets. At least from what I've seen browsing dealers sites lately.

One that isn't that much bigger (except width) compared to others with a 40-50 year age gap like Golf, Mini and Escort/Focus. VW Kombi and ID Buzz. A little bit longer, slightly lower.

As a bit of a naysayer, and to throw some balance in, I know what folks would come out of alive. That comes from me -riding a motorbike (and being told of the risks by everyone) -having a car nut friend, whom some know here, lose his sister in a head on crash. Other guy walked out fine, she didn't. He since has looked into the stats of NCAPs and is very fussy about what his other half buys. -having 2 guys I know die in Pug 205 GTis. One owned his for a week after selling a `bloated' 306 GTi6. While I hate cars getting bigger I also accept why they have. More traffic, more people, more stressful lives. There's alot more to juggle with frankly. Does that mean I hate old cars? Far from it. I did several road trips in older stuff and will continue to do so. But I am more aware of the risks now. Crumple zones, airbags, ESP setups etc all play a part. I love the journey of car and cherish what it was and what was enjoyed Christ, even hero driver Misha Chaudrin was berating AutoAlex`s chum for giving him a car with no ABS on a wet Nurburgring. Anyway, it's photo time

No doubt new ‘stuff’ in them makes for a larger vehicle, but some is literally just for the sake of it. Have you seen the size of the brand new Ford Ranger pick ups? Ffs it’s nearly the size of a Dodge Ram.

I've ordered a new Dacia Jogger hybrid to replace the dog van.
Bearing in mine the underpinnings are derived from the current Clio, a B segment small car, the thing is huge, over four and a half metres nose to tail.
Mind you, it actually brings some benefits by way of a huge interior so I foresee a happy gundog when he finally sees his new travel arrangements.

I believe it's because of model loyalty. You want to stay with the Escort or Golf but in reality, middle age spread so they grow the models with you and stick in something smaller for the younger buyers.
