Parked next to what I consider a smallish car these days and was completely blown away by this Kia tiny MPV in terms of size. A 9000 isn't a small car by any means but it's minature compared to the Kia. Are their any laws covering car size, or is it sponsored by wing mirror manufacturers?

Some 9000's, a 900, an RX8 & a beetle

I dare say it’s constrained by the dimensions of a carriageway

Just compare an old nissan micra to the current one! I tried to find a picture but failed. But it's similar to old an new-ish fiat 500.

Pics of cool old cars? I can only see one.. might have been a more constructive addition to the conversation if you added some pics. As you said in 60six thread you locked, Modern cars and their data mining, "MO: Modern cars aren’t evil." I used to think the Dodge Dakota was quite a big pick up, but...

I agree, look at the size difference of the wheels, I had a three door years ago and I thought this was like a monster truck on the road, not any more!

I’m sure however there have also been a gazillion ‘big moderns Vs. Their smol retro counterparts’ but I’m happy for this to be another one as times change

As car models get bigger, the biggest in the range die off and the smaller cars get a new model below them. Goodbye Granada/Scorpio and Omega, hello Ka and Adam. Mondeo and Insignia's days are numbered now too. My dad switched from Escorts and a Focus to Fiestas a few cars ago now, the newer Focus got too big for what he needed.

Don't forget that Mondeos and Insignias are physically bigger than the Scorpios and Omegas that were considered large cars in the range. The real problem with the sheer size of things like a Focus is that it's considerably less space efficient than the Escort it originally replaced

It's not just cars, back in the day you would be king of the road in an F88 or Scania 140.

Are their any laws covering car size? I don't believe there are, but from my time working in engineering at a certain Midlands purveyor of large cars, there was some concern at being able to keep the weight of the car under the 3500Kg limit for people to be able to drive them on a car license I think most of us will recognise that safety is probably the main aspect that drives cars to grow in size, compare a 1959 mini door with a 2022 Mini door and it's probably at least 3 times thicker but actually has some form of side impact protection. Then you've got all the electronics and various other gizmo's that need packaging in a modern car and you end up with something pretty big. That's before you even get to the customer's mindset and the notion/fallacy that some people have of feeling safer in a bigger car, coupled to the rise of the SUV/crossover but that's a whole other thing! On the other hand, I wonder how many cars have got smaller/lighter going from an old to a new generation? The 350Z managed to be a bit smaller than the 300ZX (2+2 at least)

One of these is a classic from 1991 . . . both of these seats 4 to 5, but in only one can all of them see out the side windows . . .one of them, despite having an engine 4.6 litres smaller, is faster on the back road commute home Only one of them needs a wash!

Don't forget all those airbags that surround You in a modern car. This causes the interior being smaller than in older cars that are even smaller on the outside.
