Watching this with bated breath Bruce, the V6 conversion is something I've looked at a few times before. Try and get pics of the bulkhead modifications if possible, this is the part that put me off a bit! Either way, going to be exciting once finished

fibreglass wings are what you need chap looking forward to seeing the camry lump wedged in I'm not too sure about the fibreglass ones - I'm sceptical about the fit & finish, let alone the quality of them. the ones i've seen chap have been so good (close to oem) that until you tap it with your hand you wouldnt know it wasnt metal/oem not sure if there are different manufacturers but ill see what i can find out if you like? and good work on the camry watching with much interest!

Try and get pics of the bulkhead modifications if possible, this is the part that put me off a bit! Thanks Adam, The bulkhead was always the bit that concerned me too - I was never convinced with the various ways it has been done so far but I have a cunning plan for something unique and hopefully more 'OEM' looking. I planning for the whole conversion to eventually look like it came from Toyota like that when new (i.e. not to look like a conversion) I also want to retain as much of the boot space as possible because I still want to maintain a reasonable level of carrying capacity. Photos will certainly be forthcoming as things progress.

It's out.... Sorry for the bad shot! Heading back over to Wales in a minute to help strip it down. I'll be coming back with a van full of engine bits to clean/paint/zinc plate etc....

Great progress there Bruce, and knowing the state of your toys, this will be a seriously good looking conversion.
Enjoy the break too, I am very sure you have enjoyed it.
Oh, and remember the artwork for the bus seats when you get around to it, there is no mad rush yet.

Thanks Dude,
Just got back from Wales with a van full of engine parts ready to be degreased, cleaned up, painted etc...
Got some photos too which I'll upload in a bit which show the condition of the engine....SPOTLESS!!
Despite having covered over 180,000 miles, the bores are totally unmarked and still have all the orginal honing marks on them. All the waterways are completely immaculate and it shows that this car has been really looked after (as well as a tribute to how good these engines are in the first place)
The conversion will be as OEM looking as possible, so no silicone hoses or crimp connectors. I think the words 'attention to detail' are very strong whenever I'm thinking what to do with anything.
I'll get the photos up very soon.
As for the break from work - I'm only on my first day and was in Wales by 8.30 this morning raring to go. Hopefully I'll be able to get a lot of progress made on this, the MR2 itself, the Mystery Machine (big Delica) and also the Rascal!
Maybe I should rephrase the word 'break'?? LOL

This looks like a great project. ill be keeping track of this. Thanks Dude - I'm flattered that your first post is to comment on my build! Cheers... (I see you're local to me, feel free to get in touch and pop around for a visit...) Right - update time. Here's a shot of what now looks like a 'Camry Allroad' Jed inspecting the ride height A boot full of parts that won't be needed on the MR2 Now to the interesting comparison shots with another (lower mileage) V6 they have in the workshop which quite obviously wasn't as well maintained as my motor (the guys commented on mine being the best condition V6 they have ever seen internally) My cylinder bore - no crud, no wear, no pitting, just nice & shiny with all the original honing marks visible: The 'other' V6 bore - pitted, worn and looking quite sorry for itself! This one will have to be stripped down & rebuilt: My block - the waterways are mint, clean and totally clear of grime, sludge or any kind of build up The 'other' V6 - spot the difference in an engine that hasn't been very well looked after My head - clean, fresh and looking good (although I've already got a pair of ported heads for my engine) The 'other' V6 head.....again, this will need a strip down & rebuild (or the owner might be able to buy mine off me) The other side of the head - no cam wear whatsoever....the guys commented that you'd think the engine had only covered a few thousand miles judging by the internal condition. Guess I'm pretty lucky and got me a good donor vehicle?? My rack of engine parts - now all sat in the back of my van awaiting a clean up/paint and some proper MM TLC ;D More updates to come....

Thanks for the comments guys - hopefully dropping the ported heads off to the machine shop tomorrow for some extra tweaking.
Just bought 6kg of soda crystals, so tomorrow I'm gonna try it out with my compressor/sandblast gun to see if the alloy parts really do come up like new?
Watch this space..............

I guess it all depends on how easily I can get Stoner Pete (Stoner as in the stonemason ) to give up my compressor for a bit ;D I think he's got quite used to having it at his disposal now. Will let you know the results.

Yesterday's progress: I took the heads over to JB Racing who will be doing the headwork for me. Thanks to Black8driver (Si) for putting me onto them. JB's website: www.jbracingmotorsport.co.uk/Jamie, the owner, is a great guy, nice to deal with, very helpful and was very patient in answering my barage of questions. After a lot of checking and measuring, we have concluded that it'll be better to get my existing Camry heads ported from scratch rather than him 'tweaking' the already ported heads I picked up. This way, everything is done to his spec rather than him adapting someone elses work. Sure, the cost has almost doubled, but I fully understand where he is coming from and just know that the end result will be pretty amazing. He is going to fully port/polish the heads and the two inlet manifolds along with the exhaust ports to match the tubular manifolds. Compression ratio will be increased and new shims fitted & matched when the head is rebuilt. He is also going to lighten my flywheel as well! The Camry heads & inlet manifolds on one of the work benches: My stainless tubular manifolds & downpipes: The engine build room - spotless in an understatement! I am so impressed with everything about the company and just know that Si was right when he said I'd be hard pushed to find a better place to get the work done. Today's progress will be stripping down, checking and sorting all the boxes of engine bits ready for cleaning/zinc plating etc...

How do these particular engines benefit from the head work you're getting done? One of the best projects of 2009 so far on this site I think.
