Venoms! Looking forward to seeing how this looks Word of warning though, heard bad things about 17"s on mk1s, and you have to be quite careful with tire choice to avoid fouling. this thread might help Don't worry about tyre choice - all covered and having owned two Mk1's previously, I know the pitfalls/modifications needed to get rubber to fit on a lowered MR2. The bad things you hear about 17's is 10% truth, 90% rumour and speculation. Most of the hate comes from people who've never run them on an MR2 but 'heard' or 'read' about the pitfalls. It's easy to quote a story but most of these people have only ever run 14's or 15's themselves. I'm not saying there won't be any negatives, but appropriate offsets, correct tyre choice and properly set up geometry will mean negligable difference over 15's or 16's. Thanks for the heads-up anyway. Oh you surprised me with your wheel choice there! I like though, should look fresh IMO. last time I was on teh Mk1 forum some lad was repeatedly slated for having 3 spokes in 17" on his Mk1, looked great IMO possibly just need another colour on em like your black or grey. I too have heard the scares that 17" spoil handling, but knowing you (briefly-virtually) you'll have some dinky track wheels tucked away or something! The Mk1 forum makes me laugh sometimes. If you don't fit in with some members 'criteria' then you don't fit in at all. A lot of them tend to be purists who have a list of 'approved' mods - and deviation from those mods is normally met with abuse or negativity. I can't be doing with that! Clipboard Nazi's don't make for an inviting forum and I have tended to check that site less & less. I can't wait to see the reaction to this particular MR2 - there will be quite a few things that will really get the haters out of the woodwork! As you know on this site.....it's my ride, my way. Tidy work too, some of us should take a leaf from your book. I'm dreading putting the Sierra back together! Thanks Dude, I really appreciate the comment. Just wait til you see what I've got planned - a lot of it will be under the surface stuff that no one outside this build thread will ever know about, but it'll be the sort of thing that really makes this MR2 differnet under the skin.

When the bolts shear off like that, what do you do to get the panel off? I tried removing the skidpan on the 140Y, and the first bolt just sheared off! I didn't touch any of the other, cause I know that was going to happen to the rest. So I've got to ask, how do you remove them? Normally I soak anything that looks remotely rusty with a good dose of penetrating oil. This is always a good time for a cuppa. Blitz a load of bolts/nuts with p/oil then have a break, drink tea and start another little job. When you go back to the bolts, they usually come undone a lot easier. A lot of the screws that have sheared on my MR2 have been on little brackets that were realy rusty. I kinda knew they would just snap, so just let them break in the knowledge that I will buy new brackets to replace them. All new brakcets (or any that are saved) will be zinc coated and painted before refitting along with a good dose of copper grease on the nuts/bolts to help prevent it happening again for a VERY long time. Anything that shears in a captive nut on the bodywork/chassis will be drilled out and re-tapped. I hate this job - it always seems to take forever, but is always worth doing properly if you can. Yesterday I had a screw on the front spoiler that simply would not come out. I left it soaking in penetrating oil overnight (ring of blu-tac around the screw to make a 'moat' which was filled with oil) but the next day, still no movement! I then used my dremel to cut a slot across the head so that I could use a large flat blade screwdriver with some force....it still wouldn't budge! I ended up using a grinding/cutting disc on the dremel and carefully ground the head of the screw away unitl it popped off. The rest of the screw and the clip it was rusted into just fell away from beneath. No damage was done to the plastic spoiler. Time consuming, but a good result in the end.

Is this the top secret set of wheels we've been hearing about for so long now? I don't think it is .. he has many swanky wheels he is keeping pretty quiet! Ain't that the truth! ;D David and anyone else who has seen my special stash of wheels is sworn to secrecy. The Venom's are my 'fun' set that I don't mind showing....but the others will remain under wraps/locked away for a while yet. They will probably be a bit of an anti-climax when they do finally find their way onto the car, but I've never seen any on a Japanese car yet, let alone an MR2. ;D

Good to hear! I have faith in your abilities I know what you mean about the mk1 club too, they take themselves far too seriously most of the time Waiting with bated breath for the big wheel-reveal ;D

Coolest wheels evAh. I have been hunting around for some allessio (proper ones) three spokes or the smooth chunky five spokes or venoms in 17" flava. If i found any of them in 18" i'd have a heart attack from excitement.
Can't wait to see those on the car.

Bumper reinforcer is about £130 and still carried by Toyota. Make sure you get the right one as A and B have different shapes so you need different foams and outer skins to suit. Also has the towing eyes on so worth replacing so you can tow if it ever needs it. New ones come with wafer thin paint on mind so get busy with the hammerite. Thanks Dude, Plans already afoot for the reinforcer bar. A new one has already been ordered (Mk1B) but it'll be seeing some extra work before being fitted. I'm ordering all new bumper brackets as well as a lot of new nuts & bolts....everything bar the bumper skin & foam will be replaced, but all of the steel parts will be sent to the platers for a good old dose of zinc before being given a thick coat of paint (POR15) so will be much more corrosion resistant than the original items. All nuts & bolts will be treated to a layer of copper grease before being mounted, so as well as the zinc plate and paint, they will have even more protection and also stand a chance of coming back out in the future without the fear of the shearing off. This car will have so much attention to detail under the surface.....but most people will never know. Even the wings, front metal valance and headlight covers will be zinc plated before being repainted.

So here is the progress from today. Started stripping the front end down. Headlight units looking a bit sorry for themselves. It's only light surface rust and these are hidden under the headlight covers, but it's rust all the same, so it has to go. Headlight units out. These will be fully stripped down and refurbed. Even though none of this is seen, they will look like new when they go back in. Front end now off.....looks a bit strange! A pile of bits from today: So here is the 'rust report': Lower A panel (offside) - a bit crusty, but I don't reckon it'll need any welding. Lower A panel (nearside) - not as bad, but a small patch will need welding the other side of the seam. Rear end of sill (offside) - needs a small patch in here (this is where the rear spat/skirt triangle sits) Rear end of sill (nearside) - pretty much the same as the other side. Pretty clean sills for a 21yr old car with factory sideskirts: Bumper reinforcer is shot (but I knew that already) - a new replacement is on its way from Toyota Offside front wing is pretty crusty. A new one will be ordered. Notice how the rust is kept perfectly within the area of the factory sideskirts. Not surprising really! This little lot fell out from the A panel area when I took the wing off Radiator cover makes a good bolt/screw organiser. Must rememeber to bag/label everything.... Well that's it for today. What with playing around on the Rascal, I didn't get as much done as I wanted to! Different story tomorrow hopefully? More updates soon.

Mines spent a few years hanging around a grassy 'yard' its gonna be worse, eek! luckily indoors for a bit now... Anyway keep up the good work, bet ya dreading/welcoming going back to work!

Not much done today - only managed a few hours of removal work before heading out to enjoy the weather. Stripped out the boot & air intake pipework to find it all pretty minty in there: BIG SHOCK! Someone has previously waxoiled the inside of the rear arches and it would appear that these are the original arches....no evidence of repair panels/welding could be seen! That is very very unusual on a Mk1 (most MR2's with original arches resemble a browny/red swiss cheese by now! Many are onto their 2nd or even third set of arch repairs) I was very pleased to find this. Lower trailing edge of the nearside rear arch was quite blistered....a few prods and I got some holes going on. Still not at all bad for a 21yr old MR2 Offside lower trailing edge looking quite good So if these are the original arches, then this little car must be pretty rare in the MR2 world? Surprisingly little rust Rear bodywork removed and not a single sheared nut or bolt! Today was a good day Rear bumper reinforcing bar pretty rusty, but it's all surface rust. No rot. Hoorah - that's £130 saved....just needs a blast and trip to the zinc platers before being treated to a few coats of POR15 Some of what I removed today: Some of the air intake ducting removed from the boot (a few bits I forgot to put into the pic!) Many thanks to Hotwire for the great tea making skills. LEGEND!

Looking good mate, it doesn´t look too bad at all If it was a Ford it would have a lot more holes and they would be bigger! ;D It would seem that I have found quite a tidy/fairly rot free orignal & unmolested MR2. It's difficult to assess the rust without removing all the spoilers, side skirts and boot trim, so it can be a bit of a lottery. Obviously my numbers came up on this one. Sure there is some welding to be done, but not nearly as much as I was expecting. Happy days.... ;D

When something this rare comes along.....how could anyone resist?? I certainly couldn't: Specially imported from America last year, this is a genuine TRD supercharger designed for the Camry V6. The current owner who imported it (at great cost) had a change of plans and I managed to pick it up for a great price. Put it this way - they are SO rare and in SO much demand in the US I could sell it over there for double what I paid!!! Needs a good clean but that's not really an issue. It's the fact I've managed to track one down and the best bit - it also came with a brand new smaller pulley for even higher boost. Combined with the headwork, tubular manifolds and standalone ECU.....I should be seeing somewhere around the 280bhp mark. That gets me all excited.....
