How do these particular engines benefit from the head work you're getting done? All flat faced parts inside the manifolds/head are going to be taken right back & knife edged. The intake ports will be opened right up and then the intake manifold matched all the way back - all of which will give a much better, cleaner flow for the intake. The combustion chamber is having a fair bit of work done to clean up/smooth everything around the valves which are also being cut to 30degrees. The compression ratio will be slightly increased by a few extra passes when the heads are skimmed. All of this will add a reasonable amount of extra power over standard, but when combined with the tubular exhaust manifolds (and appropriate exhaust), everything should work even better to give quite a significant power hike and a more free revving engine. I was going to get some custom cams made too, but after a long chat, it was decided to get the headwork done first, get the car running and if I decided to go for more power after that, it wouldn't be a huge deal to fit custom cams 'in situ' (i.e. gives me more chance to save up for that upgrade at a later date) I will also be having a standalone ECU eventually, but want to get the car on the road first. The Camry ECU will be fine for the time being, but when I go Megasquirt (custom built from scratch) I'll be able to do away with the AFM, dizzy and quite a lot of other stuff from the engine. This will allow me to map/tune the car to suit all the mods done, so I will literally be able to set the car up to maximise the effects of all the engine mods. I'm tackling it in a 'modular' way - get the basic work done on the engine where, once done, the engine can stay in the car. Then I can start to upgrade bit by bit (cams, then ECU etc..) without having to rebuild anything/remove the engine. Any mods carried out after fitting the ECU can be mapped in and tuned at any time....I'll be having a serial port tucket away under the passenger seat, so at anytime, a laptop can be plugged in to system to tweak the complete set-up of the engine at any stage. Jamie roughly 'guestimates' that the headwork should see approx 25-30bhp increase, quite possibly more! Combine that with the tubular manifolds and there should be another 10bhp. Removing the restrictive cats could add another 5-10bhp, so hopefull there is somewhere in the region of 40bhp to be had from the work....possibly more? How knows?? (all will be revealed when I get it rolling road checked) Also.. this build looks like it'll be epic One of the best projects of 2009 so far on this site I think. WOW! Thanks guys.... There are lots more plans afoot yet. Been on the phone to various companies today. Quite a few bespoke parts are in the pipeline, but details will be revealed as more certainty is known (i.e. will they fit/work) Right - I'm off outside again to carry on cataloging/measuring and sorting every nut, bolt, washer, clamp & bracket off the engine & gearbox!! Happy days!

Progress from today.... Today was a very, VERY tedious affair, but hopefully it will pay off? Unlike some people, I can't just pull a car apart and throw everything into a box because I'll never know what bolt/nut etc...fitted where? A few nuts & bolts maybe, but certainly not when there are hundreds of the damn things. Normally I'd just put everything in labelled bags which makes it easy to work out what went where. Seems logical enough and works for me - but here's the rub: I'm sending all (and I mean ALL) the steel parts off to be zinc plated. It's cheaper to have them all plated in one go rather than little bag at a time, so this means everything ends up in the same box, all mixed up! GREAT! So - today I sat out on the drive and measured, photographed and recorded details of EVERY SINGLE nut/bolt/clip/bracket etc....this took me hours! Here is my little sunny workstation on the drive with just four of about 80+ bags of bits: I photographed each bag of fixings then measured each individual item and wrote all the data down in my notepad. I could then upload the photos and make a proper record of all the bits for later reference. I've got 85 photos to label up from my notes, but I'm gradually getting there. Below is the first along with number 35 which is where I am up to so far. I have given up for today, but only have 50 left to do. Might not seem much progress, but it does take a lot of time......hopefully it'll be worth it in the long run?? This is what half of the fixings looks like when thrown in a box together: It's only when I look at that picture and realise there is a further 50% to go in there that I start to understand why I am doing this. Does this mean I've got OCD or something?? ;D

Bloody hell, yes! Surely a jobs not done properly unless you've got about 10% of the parts left over after putting it all back together again?! Massive respect, you must have the patience of a saint

Busy with other things today, so only a few minutes of progress made. Goes like that sometimes I guess? I actually started work on the MR2 itself. Took the front spoiler off to check the condition of the front wings (quite a weakspot for rust where the spoiler sits over the front of the wing) Spoiler off: The centre brackets came off OK, but every single nut/bolt on the outer four brackets sheared off! Not too surprised and a good excuse to order some fresh new brackets. Once I've got the new brackets, all of them (new ones and the existing centre ones) as well as all the nuts/bolts will be zinc plated then painted. Shouldn't be any more rust issues for a VERY long time. Front nearside wing has a few bubbles around the arch area but the section under where the spoiler sat was very clean and rust free....I was quite surprised! Front offside wing is looking a bit more sorry for itself. Quite corroded around most of the arch... ...and you can't really see it in this photo, but some lovely big blisters of rust under where the poiler was sat. I'll almost certainly fit a new offside wing, but will hold judgement on the nearside one until I get chance to remove it, check it more closely.

glad your happy with jamie's place (jb racing) he's a top bloke and really knows his stuff. u wont be dissapointed.. Thanks Dude, You were spot on about Jaimie, great bloke and very reassuring. You just know his work is gonna be top notch. I'll try and make time to come over during the week. Those ideas discussed on the phone yesterday have got me thinking. A visit to Westbury is on the cards me thinks ;D What car do you expect to be in for RRG this year? Hmm - tough one that! I'll be getting the big Delica cleaned up and ready to roll for the gathering (it'll be my mobile home for the weekend) but I'd like to also try and get the V6 finished in time - possibly trailered there behind the Delica (gonna need a MASSIVE drop plate on a custom tow-bar though!) The Turbo MR2 won't be making an appearance because I don't really feel it's really my car to take to a show. Track day, yes....but I haven't invested enough of me in the Turbo to warrant it being classed as 'mine' if you know what I mean? It's currently a fun thing to enjoy while the V6 is being built.

Only had an hour or so left today after playing with the Rascal, so not as much acheived as I would have liked. Front bumper was a proper beeatch to remove! Lots of siezed nuts/bolts, so I'm prob just gonna give up with the penetrating oil from now and just order every clip/bracket/fixing new from Toyota! Bumper off, the main bumper bar/crossmember was pretty crusty in places (as I expected) So that'll be something else to order then - I think it's a bit too far gone in places.... It's not all bad though - the rust at the bottom of the A panel was only marginal and certainly a lot better than I was expecting: Initial look at the sills is fairly promising too - pretty solid from what I have seen so far. In other news - my retro kitsch rimmage arrived in the form of some lovely Venoms. Pre-chav, pre-barry boys, boy racer classics with a 17" flavour and matt black to give them a more modern edge. Not to be taken seriously, but I'm sure you know that anyway. Looking forward to seeing them fitted..... ;D

Venoms! Looking forward to seeing how this looks Word of warning though, heard bad things about 17"s on mk1s, and you have to be quite careful with tire choice to avoid fouling. this thread might help

When the bolts shear off like that, what do you do to get the panel off? I tried removing the skidpan on the 140Y, and the first bolt just sheared off! I didn't touch any of the other, cause I know that was going to happen to the rest. So I've got to ask, how do you remove them?

Oh you surprised me with your wheel choice there! I like though, should look fresh IMO. last time I was on teh Mk1 forum some lad was repeatedly slated for having 3 spokes in 17" on his Mk1, looked great IMO possibly just need another colour on em like your black or grey. I too have heard the scares that 17" spoil handling, but knowing you (briefly-virtually) you'll have some dinky track wheels tucked away or something!
Tidy work too, some of us should take a leaf from your book. I'm dreading putting the Sierra back together!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Reminds me of my old Mk1, also managed to shear off nearly every bolts, ended up with a poy full of 10mm sockets awaiting the removal of the stuck nuts!
A bloke in MK that sold me a few bits had a garden full of MR2 including a V6 Mk1 he'd done, they look really at home in the engine bay.
Bumper reinforcer is about £130 and still carried by Toyota. Make sure you get the right one as A and B have different shapes so you need different foams and outer skins to suit. Also has the towing eyes on so worth replacing so you can tow if it ever needs it. New ones come with wafer thin paint on mind so get busy with the hammerite.

I thought I was going to get a torrent of abuse, but it seems the world is now ready for the revival of some rather epically bad wheels. Tacky; yes, marmite; yes, but boy I can't wait to get them on the car. I'm glad you understand where I am coming from with these.... ;D
