i went to charge up one of the batteries I had sitting around today, but it didn't sound right at all!
plugged it in, and swtiched on the charger, and the battery started making a fizzing/boiling sound, almost like a kettle boiling. so i turned it off pretty quickly, and left it!
I presume it means it's f**ked, even though it was fine about 2 weeks ago?

It's overcharged I think - you get this if your alternator is knackered and doesn't limit the charging. They can actually swell and explode under all the (explosive) gases. You're supposed to take the little caps off the top if there are any as well.

That's your acid boiling - stand well back! It means the lead plates inside have made contact with each other and caused an upset in polarity - yes, your battery is dead beyond rescue!

What about when its charging, you have the caps off, and after a while little bits of liquid start jumping out of the cap holes, this okay?

Id hazzard a guess at it being dead. Without cutting it open you cant tell what the plates look like, Has it dried out inside? As if its still wet then the plates shouldnt have deformed. (theortically)

it's still wet inside, but to be honest, I think i'm gonna treat it as dead, as it's not worth it potentially going off in my face!

I would concider it absolutely normal unless it's really loud. I've charged loads of bubling batteries, they tend to do it if they're empty and you charge them a bit too fast. You'll ruin them if you boil them too hard and long though. And yes, take of the caps if possible.
Hell, i've got a friend who's charged batteries using a welder!
