Ben owns a Volvo, Becky owns a Fiesta, Ben buys a Dyane, sells a Dyane, Becky buys a Passat, Ben should sort his Volvo but hasn't because he can't face the running costs, Ben gets the Fiesta and duly rips it apart ;D Now that we live together, everything thing is 'ours' rather than mine or hers. But that does mean I get to be chief custodian of Becky's Fiesta now. So we will call it 'Ben's Fiesta' now Here's a pic of it sometime early last summer (I can date it by the state of Volvo's bodywork). It hasn't changed much visually since then. It's got a bit more tired from being an unloved daily, the engine has got a little less nice, burning a tad more oil, misfiring a little more often, hesitating more when it gets cold and the bodywork is a little tattier. It's coming off the road for some love. There's some welding on the back of the NS sill that I did last year which is passable, but not pretty and a couple bits in primer that need stripping off and redoing because it's been left in primer too long. Nothing too bad. Visually, it's going to change a bit. The 'PseudoSport' stripes are going as replica models are something of a bugbear for me and I'm undecided about the bodykit at the moment. I like the colour, but that doesn't mean I'm not fickle enough to change my mind and paint it a different colour. The Pepperpots are a bit 'meh' but nothing has jumped out at me yet as a replacement so I'll just keep an eye out. I'm not decided on the interior yet. I'm not very good at interiors as I break all the clips ;D The only thing I've decided is that it's having lowback seats; it's my neck and I'll break it for the sake of styling if I want Mechanically, it's all changing. I'm one of those people who dreams up plans for cars but never quite goes through with it. I hate being one of those people, so this time it isn't allowed. I'm fitting a Fiat FIRE engine and despite my initial naivety as demonstrated by the pic below, it all seems very acheivable and should be totally unique. As a pre-emptive... "Why don't you just fit a Zetec?" Why don't you just knob off or add something constructive I've mentioned on the Forum a couple times that my criteria are as such.. Needs to be more modern than the old crossflow Use less fluids (any and all of them ;D ) than the old crossflow Have five gears Be a really cheap donor Fit between the UNCUT chassis rails. turns out not many four cylinder FWD engines are all that narrow. Plenty of obvious and not so obvious choices were considered, and various emails and PMs sent to people who owned cars with my potential engine asking them nicely to nip outside with a tape measure. The Fiat came up trumps with a combined engine and 'box width of just 780mm. Time for more research..

Turns out fate played a helping hand and Bruce and some of the Area52 guys happened upon a REALLY cheap mk2 punto that was to be pillaged for everything and then weighed in. Thanks guys ;D I got a text that simply said 'got you an engine' and by the time I was in Bristol, it was dangling on a crane ready for me with a completely labelled loom ;D It's a mk2 1.2 which means it's MPI with about 60 BHP and plenty of room for upgrading as and when I want to. Here it is dangling on the crane kindly lent to me by Hardcore First thing that needed doing was removing the mounts and hydraulic gubbins that I won't be needing clutch slave cylinder won't be needed.. Brakes are already servo assisted but I will probably be removing the servo anyway.. That'll do for now. I'm going to bed. I'll start chatting electrics tomorrow

What you need is a uno turbo engine!

The plan is to leave the Fiesta's electrical system largely unchanged and have a standalone loom made from the Punto to run the engine. It'll be using stock management. The main stumbling point with this is to find an elegant solution to the ignition switch. It may involve using the Fiesta switch/key and having a separate 'push button' panel, though that isn't ideal. Plenty of time to fathom that, though. The loom is essentially split into two; everything infront of the dash, and everything behind it. The two are joined by a combined fusebox and ECU somewhere under the dash. I've stripped down the interior loom and have probably removed 80% of the wiring (this is all neatly coiled up.. there's a lot!) It left me with this (all fuel pump/sender related) And this, the rest of the interior loom I've kept this as I reckon it'll have a little fit if it isn't connected I haven't yet stripped the enginebay side of it, but looking through, I reckon t least 60-70% of the wiring is unneeded. Bums, time for work already.. I'll add more at lunch

Crumbs that dash panel is basic and then some! may be worth seeing if you can swap it for one with rev counter and stuff if you are going to use it in the car...

It has begun! This should make for quite an interesting drive when finished, if you want a hand with wiring mate just give i a shout never sampled any of Fiat's finest but then i try to avoid italian electrics where i can....... When's the motor getting offered up?

Quite vitally, I have these The transponder ring is interchangeable, but the key itself is coded to the ECU. If I were to lose this, I'd say an expletive. And I also have this, which has been most helpful The point I got to last night was all of the loom connected on the floor, but I didn't want to put a battery across it yet since there were two connectors that are interchangeable and I need to check.. No reason why it shouldn't start up on the floor now though. And that's the next plan Stumbling points that I had not forseen that I'm figuring out at the moment.. Punto gearbox is hydraulic clutch and electronic speedo. Looks like pillaging from a Cinq box will convert it though (Thanks, Phil ) The ignition switch bit I mentioned earlier Fuelling.. I can't use the stock pump as it's an in-tank thing, so I'm sorting out a lift pump, high pressure pump and swirl pot (thanks Bruce and Steve ) There's lots more, obviously, but that's all that springs to mind for now. Still, at least I have the 'rebuild kit' ;D Phil, I agree.. however I don't really like the look of modern dials and stuff in an old car. I'll rip those clocks apart so they're as dainty as possible and hide them out of the way (if they're needed at all...) Steve, I'll be offering it up when I actually have the car.. I become custodian in a few weeks. I need to sort/sell Volvo in that time as well.

Looks great Ben!
With regards to the clocks, have you thought about stripping it down so it is just the PCB's and the mechanisms and then fitting them into a Fiesta set? I would try this on a spare set though!
I am really looking forward to seeing the progress on this one, it seems like a genius idea to make a classic into a much more usable daily!

Not a bad idea.. I have some spare Fez clocks I think and base spec Punto ones would be pennies. Will have to see if I can pick one up to strip down and have a bash with. "Classic usuable daily" is entirely the point. I want to drive it all the time, and whilst it's fun to bolt massive carbs to stuff, I also want to be able to afford to run it too. Will be interesting to see if the car feels any more refined with a modern engine. There's so much other stuff that makes it feel old that I doubt it.

I couldn't believe the number of people who told me I'd die horribly because my mini didn't have headrests! It's a mini ffs! A lack of headrests would be the least of my safety concerns. Good luck with the build dude, i'll be watching

You need the bigger throttle body and nicer cam from a Punto 75!

Will be interesting to see if the car feels any more refined with a modern engine. There's so much other stuff that makes it feel old that I doubt it. It'll certainly feel different- you going to retain the stock Fez exhaust? Main thing is the Kent has a very particular note when bolted into a mk1 and you'll find that missing- but a lack of misfire and twist-n-go starting in any weather will be a sure refinement. I'm guessing the most notable difference will be on your left foot and the gearbox. 'Box you're sticking in is all cable-operated, right? Makes it relatively easy to set up for where the shift feels "right" for you in relation to the steering wheel, which can make a difference to your perception of driving it. I'd say work with the Fiat gauges, but man, that is basic. Sad that the Fiesta came with more instrumentation standard! The sender you can ditch for the cylinder head temperature and modify the Ford one to fit the engine maybe- the speedo though... maybe re-calibrate a Fiesta gauge and stick the dial for the Fiat in back of it. Shame it's only a 180 degree arc. Don't know what the ECU would do if it was presented with a different dash- not sure if the ODO reading is stored in the ECU or the dash or not. --Phil

You need the bigger throttle body and nicer cam from a Punto 75! There is a plan in motion. ;D I like the way you're going with this, Ben - and I'm sure it'll work brilliantly. One question - do you have the red master key for that ECU?
