I may have imagined it, but I've got a feeling there were some Nivas' that had the Cit/Pug 1.9 diesel (XUD) engine in them. I guess it could have been an aftermarket conversion. I know I looked at getting one in the late 1980's, but was scared by the sub-30's fuel consumption, that and I'd just bought a house :? There's this: tinyurl.com/294sv6 for £72 and this: tinyurl.com/2auu8wfor nearly £500 on 'bay at the moment.

A friend of mine used to Enduro rally a Cinq. The biggest problem, which someone above hinted at, is wheels and tyres. IIRC they're a really odd size and not used on any other car, so you're very limited in choice and by extension they're expensive.
If you're interested I can contact my mate and get any info he had about what he did - cage, suspension, brakes, sump guard, etc.

What does SEI mean? I was sure it was an SLI but when I checked it wasnt. maybe the E stands for Extra good? Effectively yes The SEi was introduced as a "run out" model to boost sales of the wedge prior to the introduction of the bubble (25/45) series. However, it was a bit of gimmic. I think they all got half leather, but didn't get electric mirrors and SR unlike some SLi models. The most popular colour seems to have been Nightfire Red and I thought that they all came with single could (i.e. no "granddad grey" lowers), but it could just be all the one's I've seen are like that. If you want to avoid HGF keep a CAREFUL eye on the coolant level. The biggest cause on the K-series is problems with the inlet manifold allowing the coolant to leak from the pipe that passes through it (pipe ~10mm OD goes from the header tank to the cambelt end of the inlet manifold. The slow leak of coolant eventually causes overheating and HGF is almost certain at that point. The tell tale to watch for is that missing coolant. Need to top it up every few days? Then you've got the problem. The other thing that really helps is to add a bleed point in the rad top hose. I used a cut down K-series water pump pipe. Right dia and has the bleed point built in.

I've been rallying a 214 for the last couple of years and we've pretty much done everything bad you can to a car (including my co-driver stuffing it into a ditch at 40mph...twice ) and we're still using them. While the whole HG thing isn't just urban myth, with a couple of mods (one very easy) and some general care and maintainance it is easily avoidable. There's plenty in scrap yards or on eBay, making spares cheap - we picked up a running 414 for £16 off eBay about 6 months ago. There's also some very active owners' forums (rovertech.net, mg-rover.org and rover200.org.uk) with all the hints and tips you need. For their age, I'd say there is little to beat them - in MPi form 103bhp from a 1.4 is still pretty impressive

A 037 came up on eBay about six months ago. I can't recall if it sold, but IIRC it had a starting price of something like £200k

****! ****! ****! I missed it I remember seeing that video years ago and have been wanting to get a copy ever since. As you say it is an amazing piece of driving. Does anybody know if there is a "watch again" version of it?

Thanks for the help. As time is running out for the rally at the weekend, I think I'll try the best of what eihter Halfords or my (very good) local motor factors have to offer.
Watch this space for feedback!!

I need to get some replacement HT leads for my Rover (214) Enduro rally car.
Any recommendations?
A couple of friends rave over Magnecor leads (two different sizes - 8.0 and 8.5 - what's the difference BTW?), but are they worth twice the price of a set of "performance" leads from my local motor factors?

So when is the Mk2 200 (wedge) going to be "retro"?

My abiding of having Montego hire cars was the ability of engine torque to overcome steering castor. Hence, if you pulled out at a T junction at anything more than about 1/8 throttle, the steering wouldn't "self-centre" and you had to manually "unwind" the steering. More than a couple of my colleagues ended up doing 180's into the kerb :-)

Things might have changed in the last 10 yrs, but here in Dorset, you didn't need planning permission for any additional building as long as it was less than 50m3. So, as I'd asked for outline planning permisson on a sun lounge that was 50.1m3, the Planning Office suggested I revisit the plans - a quick change and about 3cm less height bought the it down to ~49.8m3...no planning permisson needed However, a few years later, when I wanted to build a large shed, I did need PP as I'd "used" my 50m3 "allowance" with the sun lounge. As has been said, generally the Planning Office are really helpful...and don't p!ss them off!!!

If you do decide to go for spacers, please make sure you get ones that fit!! Someone on the Rover forums forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=148511 recently was talking about fitting spacers that were smaller diameter than the wheel hub :-0

I know I'll get flamed, but the whole cosmetic modification scene did then and still does now, leave me cold. I can appreciate the effort people put in, it is just something I don't want to do.
I got into rallying when I was very young, something to do with my dad being a design engineer at Ford AVO (I can remember being taken to the UK launch of the Mk1 Mexico - all fake sand and sad blokes dressed up as Mexican bandits!!) and ever since any mods I've done have tended to be under-the-skin performance mods - brakes, suspension, lights, harnesses, cage, sump guard, etc, etc. My second car (in about 1983) was an 'S' reg 1500 Spitfire which I set up for road rallying - I don't know if I've still got any pics - two up, two down Lucas 20-20's on the front, cage and harnesses, Triumph Tune twin exhaust set up and 185/70 tyres (which were about as big as you could fit in arches designed for 165's!)!!

Sorry to hijack the thread a little, but when we were on hols in the south of France this year, I saw what looked like a 2CV version of a Mini Moke. Anybody know what they are and how much they cost? They looked like they could be a lot of fun in the summer

If I had the guts, the money and the skills, I would have loved to have done a "262C" chop on out 850 estate - like a modern version of the P1800 estate - all three doors and pillbox windows

The main problem with actually driving them is that in a straight line they had fantastic grip, but around a corner, they understeer like a pig. That big 5-cyl engine was hung out in front of the front wheels and with a 50-50 torque split (the Torsen diff didn't come in till about 1988-89), you just couldn't get the back end to hang out and oversteer.
Also, on the 80 and Coupe quattro, the front bumper - indicator/front fog light was a different design from the FWD versions and they are the bits that take the impact if you understeer off a corner. I know, I did it. Three times :-(
