I've just downloaded DraftSight. I used to use AutoSketch but lost it in a PC upgrade, but I needed something to plan out a new 'man-shed'. It certainly does 2D CAD pretty well and seems pretty easy to pick up. They do a Freeware version, plus Pro for £££ if you feel the need. For the sake of an hour playing, I'd say give it a go and see if it does what you need.

+1 for Bridges. It was 'help yourself' about a year - 18 months go, but havent needed anything from there recently so don't know if they've changed.
I'll ask my mate (who lives in Crawley) if he knows any others.

When I was doing a lot of rallying, I went through the same thought process...it was costing more to swap tyres and rims than to enter some of the rallies! I didnt bother with balancing either, but then I was using big knobbly tyres on gravel and byways, so put of balance tyres was the least of our worries!! In the end, my mate welded up a combined bead breaker and 'post' to hold the wheel down while we used a lever to get the tyre off the rim. The lessons learnt were it needs to be seriously fixed down. I ended up drilling-in a couple of M12 raw-bolts outside the garage so I could bolt it down when we were bead breaking. If you're going to spend money, I'd buy a decent, smooth tyre lever - we made a home-built one, but even the best efforts of smoothing the business end, we occasionally caught the rubber of the rim I'm about to move house, and will have a much bigger garage there...a secondhand tyre changer is on my 'top 5' list after getting the garage built, and a car lift installed!!

Are they just interested in circuit racing or would rallying be of interest especially if they'd like to do it together? There's a very active motor club in Bornemouth www.bdcc.org.uk but you probably know them? There used to be something called Endurance Rallying which is a mix of navigation and stage rallying, but the regs were designed to keep costs down - 1400cc max engine size, classes for 1l and 1.1l as well as 1.4l. No mods allowed to the engine and very limited mods elsewhere other than safety equipment. I know the championship didn't run this year as the numbers had dropped down, but I think clubs are still running individual events. Could be worth an investigation. The camaraderie was excellent too - everybody willing to help out and the objective was to have fun.

Not sure how 420gpm equates to the power of a Jetlev, put with Poole harbour to play in, it could be fun to find out!!!

In my last post, I was commenting, somewhat heatedly, on the girls' school hours and crappy communication with parents. It gets better. They were supposed to finish at 2 PM last Friday and, bang on the dot of three, they did. The arrangement was to meet up in Adriatico so they could avail themselves of a chocolate fix via a couple of very large milkshakes. "Daddy George, we no school now until 4th November. Can we go away somewhere?" "WHAT?!!" Yes, without any notice at all, the school decides to throw a ten day holiday into the mix. God give me strength I'm sitting here reading this with my 13yo daughter looking over my shoulder...her immediate comment? "why wont [her] school do that?"!! What's the legal (?!!) minimum working age in Manilla? Do you need any help digging out the track bed? She may whinge a bit, but if you poke her hard enough she does actually work quite hard...

As mentioned above, did you bleed or completely flush the fluid? If not, would definitely be worth doing it. People (and a lot of garages) seem to think brake fluid never needs changing. I've seen stuff in ten y-o cars that looks like treacle!!

I'm very lucky to live on the SE corner of Salisbury Plain, so it was fun to take the rally car for an early Sunday morning blast before the dog walkers and horse riders wanted to share the tracks. Sadly, having crashed on a rally last year, the rebuild is taking a LOT longer than I wanted...'real life' getting in the way

Hmmm, money no object garage... Lotus Esprit turbo - just because it was my teenage poster car Ford RS Escort Mk1 - my dad helped design it at AVO, and drove one in Rally Cross for a while Audi ur quattro - complete game changer plus it sounds amazing Ford RS 200 - a bit of an affinity for Fords and rallying and Gp B in particular, plus I wanted something obscenely quick Range Rover - not sure which mk, but one of the earlier one, perhaps even a 3-door CSK with an Overfinch conversion Volvo P1800ES - my dad was going to get one when I was young...only to find out me and my sister couldnt fit in the back, so he bought an Anglia instead BMW 6-series E24 - only BMW I really like LR 101 - why? Just because everybody needs something big and green in their lives. Plus it would be fun looking down on all the 4x4 drivers. Opel Monza - always loved the shape Aston Martin DB7 - had to have something speedy and wafty

I've done the trip as far as Perpignan about 20 times over the last few years. Going via Rouen much nicer than Paris, a lot less traffic.
Personally I'd cut across to Orleans because despite the long boring drag down past Clermont-Ferrand you'll be rewarded with the trip across the amazing Millau bridge plus there's bit where you go through tunnel and burst out at the top of a huge mountain valley which the road switch-backs down the side. For an autoroute is probably my favourite bit in the whole of France.
Depending on time of day it can get slow around Beziers, but if the timing is right you can always stop off for lunch at the side of the Canal du Midi, and see the flight of locks in the centre of Beziers.
As for getting across the border going via Anndora is amazing but will add HOURS to the trip, so depends if this is about the journey or the destination!
C-F is about halfway but grim for a stop over. Saint-Flour is another ~50km but a much nicer feel to the place, as is Millau itself but then you miss out on the bridge (and it is another couple of hours on the road).

Why do you want an extinguisher? Is it to save your pride and joy if you have a fire, or save your life if you're stuck in a burning car?
A 2.25l AFFF is a waste of time for the former, irrespective of handheld or plumbed in. While AFFF may be very 'green' it really is hopeless at knocking down a fire. The professional fire crews at work were amazed that the MSA consider AFFF as a suitable agent.
Just to give you an indication of just how much extinguishant you need, a couple of years ago, I was first on the scene of a minor under-bonnet on a Rover 25 (a car I know very well as it is my current rally car). I was there literally 10 seconds after the owner first noticed smoke. I had a 2.5l AFFF and a big dry powder extinguisher (4 or 6kg) in the car, so had a go at tackling the blaze. Completely discharged the AFFF - no effect. Used the dry powder - also no effect. Ran up to the local petrol station and grabbed a couple of their really big foam extinguishers and used those. Still the car burnt. And that was on a car I knew exactly where to point them. In the end the FB came and sorted with a couple of hoses from the fire engine!!
Point being small extinguishers should be seen as being just there to buy you a vital few seconds to get clear of the car. FWIW, I'm just reshelling the rally car and I'm not bothering refitting my AFFF plumbed in system (I bought it before I knew how rubbish they are); I'm currently saving for one of the 'halon replacement' style.

Off the wall suggestion, but how much do you want to keep it and does it roll? If so, why don't you 'a-frame' tow it to wherever it needs to go? Looks like it doesnt weigh much, so almost certainly under the weight for an unbraked trailer. There's places on ebay that will hire you an a-frame for £25, or a couple FS too.

Even with the bits couriered across, I bet Caged would be cheaper. Mind you, you'd miss out on a chance to see their amazing workshop!

On my 1.4 k (the white one in my sig) I once managed to jump SEVEN teeth on the timing belt (rough rally!!) and the engine still ran but wouldnt rev beyond about 3000rpm, so not sure if half a tooth out would make a difference.
When you say the engine is 'chugging' what do you actually mean? Is it just at idle and completely alright across the rest of the rev range?
It does sound a little like the idle control valve. Is there any chance the inlet manifold or the cam/rocker cover has been changed? On the older (distributor) K's there is a subtle difference between some of the rocker covers, with some having a large internal diameter breather and others small. The only difference is the inside dia of the spigot on the cover, so it is really hard to spot. Fit a 'big' dia cover with a 'small' dia inlet manifold ICV and it all goes to ratshit!
