Hi,
I'm going through my Mk3 Golf GTI sorting all the little problems out, and one which is confusing me a bit is the power steering.
Most of the time it operates fine, but occasionally when using it at low speeds (carparks, etc) the wheel will judder violently, and when you put on full lock you can feel a hard metal contact, presumably as the lock stop gets hit? In normal operation hitting full lock feels softer, if you know what I mean.
Possibly related to this is a squealing belt, although the two don't happen at the same time.
The fluid level is fine, although it is old. I'm going to change it but to me the problem seems more than just duff fluid.
I suspected that a relief valve was sticking. Someone else suggested an air lock.
Grateful for any tips or advice!

I had a similar search last year, as I wanted a classic daily that could tow the odd car and trailer. It's a tricky one! Even the bigger classic saloons aren't all that heavy and don't have a huge towing capacity. In the end I got my Nissan Patrol, which can tow about 3500 Kg. That opens up another can of worms though, as getting an old 4x4 on a classic policy was surprisingly difficult - A lot won't consider 4x4s at all! Land Rovers seem to be an exemption to this though. I had considered one (tows up to 3.5 tonnes), but I wouldn't like to tow anything heavy with a 2.25 petrol or diesel, or the 2.5. It'd have to be either the V8 or one with a 200TDi conversion to make it comfortable to tow, but they fetch strong money for decent ones. I looked at classic Range Rovers too, but finding a solid one was hard. One of those would make a lovely tow car!
As for fuel consumption, my 2.8 litre petrol wouldn't get anywhere near 18mpg whilst towing (in fact it only just betters that on its own!). I doubt a diesel one would either. Or any older 4x4! The fuel consumption is something I just live with.
Depending on your insurer's definition of classic, how about a Lexus LS400? 2000 kg towing capacity, half a chance of hitting your fuel economy target, and a bloody nice car too.

I also never made it onto the stand! Due to a combination of being sent into the wrong paddock, and then me getting confused about the directions once I'd made it into the top paddock. Still, never mind! I ended up a bit bewildered in the general retro parking and just stuck the Patrol right at the top of the hill instead.
Thanks for doing all the organising, Tim. The stand looked great!

Oh... another Q... In the last pic, the photoshopped one. You can see the nose way in the air. Is this common or is my rear suspension/springs shot? Also what would be the ideal coil cut that I need to do to level it out as in the pic? The nose does look a bit high! I'm not used to looking at a standard height one but my guess would be that the front is high rather than the rear sitting low. Maybe someone put 280 or diesel springs in it at some point? There are different thickness spring pads available that sit in the top spring mount. It could be that those have been changed for thicker ones perhaps? I'd check that nothing else is making it sit high first, but if it does turn out to be the front springs, I'd cut one coil off the bottom and try that. Be aware that regular spring compressors won't do the job on these cars - you either need a proper Mercedes spring compressor that works from inside the spring, or unbolt the inner bolts on the lower arm and remove the spring that way, with a jack stopping the spring firing off and killing you (dangerous... I've done it this way but it's not ideal) Oh last question for the night... Does the W123 powersteering and steering box work on the W115? As mine doesn't have powersteering and I can get a complete W123 setup for around R850 (80 pounds) Not sure about that to be honest! Your car seems to have the later (wider) grille and slatted tail lights, but the early steering wheel and front bumper. Maybe the South African cars had different spec or something!

Welcome to RR! Nice W115, is it as rust-free underneath as it looks on the top? The Pentas will look cool as hell, definitely fit those! If I remember right (and it was a long while ago since I removed one) there should be holes in the rear valance and threaded bar sticking through them. The bumper fits over those and a nut on each secures it. They do tend to shear off when rusted (I recall this happening to me) so this might have happened to yours. thanks! And not quite though but at least not to hectic has been patched here and there. mmm... Think that might be what happened as there is only one hole where the bumper should fit. thanks I'll go and have a look at your thread again maybe there's some pics there. Hopefully I can sort it soon. Looks kinda strange without the rear bumper. haha I remember welding on a bolt to get my bumper back on, after the thing sheared. The rear bumper seems to rust worse than the front - I suppose all the crud gets caught there!

Looks a bit better now that its washed Still need to do the trunk and fit the rear bumper... Now my Q is where does it attach? The holes where closed when it had some rust removed. If I remember right (and it was a long while ago since I removed one) there should be holes in the rear valance and threaded bar sticking through them. The bumper fits over those and a nut on each secures it. They do tend to shear off when rusted (I recall this happening to me) so this might have happened to yours.

Welcome Steve! I no doubt saw your Toledo at RRG, but I didn't know it had such an unusual transplant! Hope you get the pics to work

Hello, thanks for reading and raising the post from the dead!
Erm... well I still have the car, and the intention to continue with it... it's just that life is getting in the way currently! (I get distracted by other cars too, which doesn't help.)
Plans are being formulated, and I want to go back to this with fresh focus.

Thanks guys, going by the advice, I think its best to just restore the herald and make upgrades such as PS. Just have to now find someone with reasonable rates to restore the body. Rear deck in bad state and with no available panels in production, so I will have you find someone who can make the pieces required. Will post some pictures today. If you're going to pay a garage a (large) wedge of money to restore it, surely it'd be more cost effective to just buy a decent one to begin with? Heralds aren't that expensive and you'd get one in good shape for far less than you'd pay for someone to restore yours. I'm assuming that other areas like footwells, sills, bulkhead, door bottoms will also need work, if the boot floor is rotten. If all it needs is a few patches, then that's a different story. If that particular Herald has sentimental value, then that's a different story again!

The Tat Auction was one of the highlights of RRG13 for me - had a great laugh, bought loads of tat I don't need AND helped out some fellow car nuts in their time of need. Win-win!

I think as fellow petrolheads, we can all imagine what a terrible thing losing your workshop and everything in it would be, even though it is just stuff.
The RR community is the best.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. I mean, what can you do? Best to just fill it up and see how she goes. I'd think that as it's only been 10km of motorway use, it won't have worked the clutches all that hard.
Somebody with a lot more knowledge than I may say differently, but that's my opinion.

Lovely! Yes! Not sure I'm feeling the colour - I can't recall how it looks in the metal but I'd worry about it having that "plasticky" look that some solid 2K paints have on classics. I'll happily be proven wrong though!

John GTVSaviour bought a set of slotmags off me aaages ago (over 2 years ago!) and I still have them. As he lives in Belgium we sort of knew that the actual delivery of the wheels would take some time. I'm heading to the Gathering and was going to bring them with me if he was going too. However, he's not logged into RR since April so I'm not hopeful that the PM I sent him will be picked up.
Does anyone know if he's going, or is anyone able to contact him via email / phone / jungle drums to ask him?!

I've just heard about this, what an awful thing to happen. This project is one of my favourite builds, and I have so much admiration for you taking it on, Mel.
For everyone who has lost projects / tools / belongings in this fire, I'll gladly help out in any way I can.

Carb jet help!!BenzBoy

If the jets are about a quid each as dodgerover said, does it not make sense just to buy a few sizes? At least you can go down a size if it's too rich then. Bogg Bros are well known for their bike carb expertise, might be worth contacting them? I'm sure they can provide jets etc with some expert advice.

Might try to latch onto this, depending on the route I'm taking. What speed would we be convoying at? If I go above 65 my MPG goes into negative figures
