Eveening everyone,
I have been offered a 2003 renault megane 1.4 dynamic for a great price (£150) has very low miles and full service history but is southern irsh plates, i think i could make a profit but reading the direct gov site and emailing dvla am still lost in how i do this.
Do i MOT the car first? Do i insure on the southern irish plates? How long does it take in total? Anyhing i need to watch for?

Is the car here or in ireland? Insure it on the chassis number, then MOT, you'll need an export form I think or the Irish paperwork to apply for a number from the DVLA who will charge you a first registration fee.
Be aware if you have a British licence you can't drive a car on foreign plates (legally)

The car is here, about 30 mile from here at my mates work place his boss brought it over or something and then deided he didnt want it and brought a new jag instead. So i buying it to raise funds for a camaro at 1600 lol. Thanks for the help will sort it out asap

Do you know anyone in NI or can you get the car there? It seems to be much easier to do it in NI but I think you have to go to one of the DVLNI MOT places (they use their own sites, not independent garages) and have what sounds like a VIC done.
There are differences in how the DVLA and DVLNI do things across the board and one of them is about registering cars from the republic. Must be relatively common so they have a procedure for Republic cars that's different to the normal procedure for registering, say, a motor from Poland or Latvia (those being the examples I was told about).

Am only 5 miles from the ferry to NI, don't think its expensive as my papa goes over there a lot. Will look into taking it over to NI and see if is worth doing there instead of here

Nope its not because then you will get a NI logbook and have to faff to register it here again......If you sell a motor to northern ireland you need to fill in the export bit (or give it to the buyer) as just doing a change of keeper doesn't work, been there done that got the t shirt with a land rover

Nope its not because then you will get a NI logbook and have to faff to register it here again Just spoke to my mate in Belfast, he's got a Glasgow supplied Fiesta with an NI logbook because he wanted to avoid MOTing it for an extra year (four years versus three - he's really tight). He was going to give the car to his Mum in Scotland so he investigated transferring it and was told that he'd just send it off and she'd get a DVLA V5. Could be that you can only do it with an NI address or it could just be the usual mixed messages from the DVLA/DVLNI (check the thread on here about the HID headlights without washers for an example of the differences).

You don't need to fill in an export section to take a car into NI from the UK. Not in the last ten years anyway. Why not sell the Megane over here as well if you bring it her for the VIC? If it was originally a UK car to begin with and had Irish VRT paid on it as a used car, you can then take it to an Irish NCT centre for the same VIC check and then you will get a rebate on the VRT. Which I really should do with my M5, apparently it's worth 1200euros as it's based on engine size.

Be aware if you have a British licence you can't drive a car on foreign plates (legally) Yes you can but you need to be insured to drive that car and it has to be road worthy. If you are taking it for a test as long as YOU are insured its not a problem.

I've only got second-hand info on the OPs question so not definite enough to answer that fully.

Sorry with the duff info, just going on what happened when I sold my landie, (a few years ago but not more than 10 - i hope) had a panic'd phone call from the buyer a couple of days later asking if I'de sent the log book off yet as it needed to be done differently for a UK-> NI transfer
