yay, another rusty old american ford! just what i need right? basically, i bought this by accident 'cos i sold me merc by accident. id seen it a few weeks previously, offered as a swap for something on another forum by the then owner, paul at coltech classics. i shot him a mail and asked if he wanted to do a cash sale on it if a swap didnt work out. it took him a couple of weeks to reply, as it turns out he was in florida buying more cars! at this point, these two pics where all id seen, i could tell it needed work but i knew i wanted it- he sent me some more pics and a description plus a link to the ebay ad he'd bought it off, a price inc. delivery was agreed, and i did the deal on the merc with its new owner, as i only wanted to sell the merc if it was getting replaced with this. the sale came about from mentioning i had one that could be for sale on a wanted ad on a FB group- proof not everyone on there is a messer! i'll be sad to see it go, but I'm more than happy with what ive traded up to, so needs must really. fortuitously paul had another car coming into the country that was due to land near me, as poole is a long way away from colchester, so we went halves on the transport and it didnt mean a day of trailers and towing. so yeah i basically bought it sight unseen from the other side of the coutry off someone i knew of but don't really 'know', apart from owning another car that was his as well in the past. but it was cheap (for reasons i will expain later) so i took a punt!

so, about a week after transferring a couple of grand into someone elses bank account, i get an early morning delivery- and to be honest, its not half bad really. from the ebay ad and what paul told me, this was what i knew- its a '50 tudor sedan, obvs. the rear wind splits have been widened and frenched '51 taillights fitted, rear wings deseamed. its been nosed and decked. front suspension has been entirely rebuilt with all new parts (either NOS or jamco), including 3" drop springs and uprated shocks. the rear has 4" blocks. the interior is in very good nick- the seats and headliner have been redone at some point. sills are very much not there, inner and outers are shot/full of filler. door bottoms and bonent leading edge are bubbled (very common on these). its also fairly obvious from how it sits, theres a reason it was cheap- it is minus engine and gearbox. there is also an issue with the paperwork, it has a registration but the DVLA have inspected it(not sure why though) and wont issue a new v5 as a major component is missing(i.e. the engine). but, i have a plan......

Nice! I was going for a 53 plymouth cranbrook a while ago, but couldn't put the cash together in the end. Love the early fifties "haystack" body shape. Bookmarked.

I've sourced the correct gearbox to do it, plus I have quite a few other bits waiting as well...... There's some rust to attend to first though!

I was never that much of a fan of the totally slab sided look until I saw one of these in the flesh. I still generally do prefer 50s stuff with hunches (like my Pontiac), but this has been a bit of a grower in the looks department. They look 100x better when on the floor with a chop and some wide whites than they do stock though.

It's a nickname related to the fact they were the first totally flat sided car to come to market in postwar America, with fully integrated wings(fenders) with no haunches or flares and no hint of running boards. It was noticeably flatter sided than any other marque or model. There's the whole tale of it supposedly being a recycled/plagiarised studebaker design, but that's a different story.
Tbh I think the entomology of most American slang names is pretty stupid, and this is no exception! It's meant to be a cos it's a rectangular box with flat sides, like shoes come in. Eloquent it ain't....... But, it's identifies the car to most people in one word, so I guess it does it job.

Got to admit, this is one nickname I'd never heard till I joined RR and it's a nickname that suggests something much squarer in my mind! Guess you had to be there, in 1949 to really get it!

... But, it's identifies the car to most people in one word, so I guess it does it job. Except down under maybe? There once was thread with pics from some aussie meeting where a few chevys or other gm stuff had plates saying shoebox. I was wondering about it and referred to that very ford, ratchart answered that it seems to be the shape not a particular model. It is a term generally applied to flat sided cars, but using it on a tri-Chevy is a misappropriation in my eyes. They're 5 years later than the ford, a whole different era in terms of design. contemporary GM products a had big hips, excluding them from the 'shoebox' name, which is why it became a term mostly used for 49-51 fords.

They'll be the first thing to go. The red that is. The paint is actually much worse than it looks, it'll need redoing so a colour change is on the cards. Not sure what to yet though, I've seen a few schemes I like.

They are called Single Spinners in Australia. The 51's are called twin Spinners. The shoebox is because they were the first US car without rear fenders. IE flat rear quarters.
Thanks Brad

They look 100x better when on the floor with a chop and some wide whites than they do stock though. No, no no! Deffo NO chop!!!! It needs a chop to shorten the rear 1/4 windows. They're wry log from the side on view, as long as the already very Long door windows, which looks odd. My plan is actually a very mild chop, but reverse raked to accentuate the taildragger stance. This is only done 2" up front and 3.5" out back and looks excellent. Most shoeboxes are over chopped imho, but this isn't. www.hotrod.com/how-to/paint-body/1308-1951-chopping-ford-sedan-roof/#photo-01A chop is less important than getting it laying frame though.
