Had a huge problem trying to find a gearbox for my saab 9000 - It's a popular thing to break so spares are quite non-existent. 2 months and loads of emails to parts people rendered nothing, but then found an ad for 'The Transmission People' stating that they can get me a 9000 gearbox reconditioned/fitted for £800 - Went for it. Didn't want to give it to these guys as knew nothing and couldn't find any info about them but I had no choice. It took them 45 days! - I knew they would experience the same grief getting the parts - car ran out of MOT while it was there. Car came back - all very good - Looks like a brand new box was fitted instead. Very happy so far. Only been up the road and back to check gearchange but everything as it should be. Preparing for the MOT - Changing pads etc and noticed a lot of oil coming out the sump. After a quick inspection I see this. Now, putting it mildly I want their blood. What are my options? I work for a solicitors and they owe me a favour, and they won't mind helping. Don't mind paying whatever it costs. Can the small claims court help as I have a lot of claims for other matters (ebay) successful with this method. Needs a new sump at 200 quid with 4 hours labour at 50-75ph. Car has been driven in the interim for two miles to check gearbox and then parked on the drive again as the MOT ran out whilst with them. Can't get hold of them - Need to calm down before I call them next week.

If you haven't already, speak to them first. Just raise the matter, see what happens.

Need to calm right down first as I *NEVER* trust garages without word of mouth reports from friends first - This happened as I had no other choice at the time.

Make the intimal call but keep it brief - whatever you say or they say cant be used legally has it's just unwitnessed dialogue - they may come clean but in all honesty if they had anything about them they should have called you and talked the situation through with you - it could have been a seized bolt etc - by undertaking the bodge they have all but admitted liability but then again how do you prove it that was not in that condition when the car went to them initially - Have a few words but put everything in writing and include copies of your pics - send it signed for mail - and advise that if do not receive a positive response within 5 working days you will place the matter with your legal advisors

I can't see a garage that's gone through the cost of fitting a new gearbox leave a car go out like that if its there fault. It would be fair less hassle for them to have taken it off and got it welded., Wouldn't have been a hard job with the car on the ramp.
The other thing not being funny but if you work for a team of solicitors you'd be far better off asking them the question other than and internet forum. No offence to anyone here. Its going to be hard to beat free legal advice.

Are you sure it was them? Maybe it was bodged before and removal/ fitting the gearbox knocked puttyweld resulting in a leak
Oh, and its hardly serious damage is it, its just a cracked sump

Car left for the garage with oil, and came back without. The sump is a pig of a job and if you can find one for sale anywhere in the UK right now let me know. If I had broke it myself I wouldn't have a problem - Wish I could be as calm as you about it.

I’ve done dozens of 9k box removal jobs , they’ll have tried to pull it on the last few mm with a couple of bolts in top and bottom and the sump casting gave in . I tried to sell all my spare 9k boxes on uk Saab’s last year at £40 each with not a sniff eventually giving them away free

It's a hard one to call! Like a few I've been here a few times and on occasions with known faces who really should have known better. I've even had guys who I've been pally with previously bodge stuff this badly. It's one reason why I am super picky about where I and I'll generally do the work myself like yourself. Let's just say I can see and partially agree with why people buy/lease new cars but that's a discussion for another time. I'll be watching this but it will be interesting to see what happens. I can't offer any advice here bar what @grumpynorthener said. dan was in a similar situation a while back so his input may be worth something too.

I’ve always said to new staff and apprentices that the rodding they get for breaking something which does happen is nothing compared to what happens if they try and cover it up . It’s not a big job for them if they source a sump or you do and get the money back from them

If not, it really is a case of your word against theirs.

Looks like they have a few branches from the website , hopefully they aren’t the standard “ buy it from a breakers and paint it shiny “ gearbox specialist

The first instance chill out and give them a call and speak to the boss it may well be a case that someone did it and covered it so they wont get in the doo doo, if your worried that it will get to legal proceedings record the call of you informing them, sounds daft but have you got any recent pictures of the underneath showing that area so you can prove that it wasn't done previously
I'd be tempted to just get the sump off and get it alloy welded if you can't find the right one

stared at the original picture, stared at both ebay links, still not sure what we are looking at or what is broken or why.
is the sump a stressed member or something? bolts to adjacent gearbox, or an engine mount, or some....thing??
they have cracked the corner of the sump doing their work, then covered it in what looks like body filler and painted it green and now that has also cracked ?
or was it bodged up before but was not leaking and now it has cracked because of their work?

This kind of stuff happens, it's how people handle it that's different. I would have a calm chat with them and at least give them the chance to put it right. It's crazy how quick people are to pack out the legal big guns in situations like this. I think a lot of the time they are not needed. Mechanics are people and also not all out to get you.

I have quite a few spare sumps if you need one provided it's for a 1994 onwards 9000. I also have about 8 or 10 spare gearboxes should you ever need another. Looks to me like they have tightened the gearbox bolt that goes through the sump without having the cover plate fitted. The cover plate has a spacer that sits between the sump and the box and without it, it will crack your sump in that spot, every time.

Got hold of one in the end - Thanks - Cover plate was on, it had been overtightened or used to pull the gearbox onto the input shaft.
