Hiya, BG. Yep I've got some news for you all. The car's been in for it's MOT! (Had a nice drive in it, yesterday - didn't miss a beat)
In the end, it did fail, though. Needs a front coil spring (Bit of an bummer, as I was hoping to get some coil-overs) some brake pipes, and rear wheel bearings. The MOT tester was very impressed with how tidy it was, and the fact that it's has no rot in the shell, whatsoever.
Just waiting on a price for the coolant flange to be fitted (If it's too much, I'll do it myself) And we're good to go.
How much do you think the car would be worth after it's finished? It will owe me about £900, all told.........

Not too bad a MOT result to be honest I don't think you'll lose any money on it

Needs a front coil spring (Bit of an bummer, as I was hoping to get some coil-overs) Surely needing a spring is a good excuse to go and get coilovers?

Thanks for the words of encouragement, guys. Just been given a final figure of £375, that's for all the work, including the MOT........and the coolant flange being replaced, as well. Happy days (Hey, if bobblegut's happy, then that's made my day! - thought I'd made an enemy for life LOL) And on the coil-overs, a certain gentleman of the parish, called Paul, might be gracing my car with a set, if we can come to an agreement, over some steel wheels for his (possible) next project. At least if the spring's replaced, I'll have the orginals to sell with the car, if I need to

Nice find, Mr Woody. How much would you want for those? (Don't worry Paul, the wheels are yours, no matter what!) Please bear in mind, I'm skint at the moment LOLZ

You could get a set of Bilstein dampers for £170 on ebay , then just some lowering springs , probably get some second hand .

All good suggestions, many thanks. What I really need, is another '16 Hole' steel wheel. Just one short of a set....

Finally got the Golf back to it's "bed" this afternoon. I was told by the mechanic that worked on her, that the shell is the most rot-free he's seen on a Mk2 Golf in a long time. It was also nice to get the MOT back with NO advisories It was a real hoot to drive, as well (No PAS, was interesting!) A few things that need to be sorted, to finish her off: Clutch bite seemed very "high" - no slipping, though - new cable? Accelerator cable Idle's low. Speedo needle "flaps"- new cable, or just needs pushing back in/greasing? Lots of movement in the gearstick when coming off the clutch - gearbox mounting? Driver's window is very "notchy" - new mechanism, needed? Steering wheel points to the right, when driving straight! Tracking? two new front wings (If being really picky) Need one more "16 hole" steel wheel (and tyres)Coil-overs. Apply tint spray to rear lights. Pressed plates and surrounds.T-cut and wax.

Good news ! I would prioritise the mechanics first , then you know you have a good base to work from .
And read / get a haynes manual !

Thanks for the help, BG. I have a Haynes manual. I find them very hard to read, though. Why include lots of technical jargon, when most people who read them, would be of a "non-mechanical" mindset?

Well done on the mot mate. As bobblegut said focus on mechanical parts first then go from there, its was once you get stuck in to it

Just a little update. A "16 hole" steel wheel has been found and duly bought. £35 (including a new tyre) with postage. Should get it next week. Then it'll be painted. The two without tyres will be shod with fresh rubber and then that's another thing off the list.

Managed to get a few hours with the car today. gave her a general tidy-up (no pun intended) and fitted my new door pins (as all the ones on the car were snapped) And got on and sprayed two of my steel wheels At least it's another step forward

Popped over to see the car again, today. Tried to fit my new pressed number plates and surrounds, but the screws were knackered (As old as the car, I think.....) New ones duly bought..... On the other hand, I did get my very FUBAR'd steel wheel sandblasted and primed: Not too bad for £15. On another topic, where can I get a decent car cover for the little Golf? I'm going to be bringing it home soon, and it will be sat under a tree all winter! Car Cover Ebay
Any good?

And today, I managed to get a bit of paint on the wheel....... It's not perfect, but a lot better than what it was. Now for the rubber.......

Well, the wheels are now on the car A few bad points.......The front rotors and pads are buggered (what's the best place to buy them from?) And on trying to install my new pressed plate (seen the front one?) I have snapped both the screws off in the boot - which I have found is rotten where they are screwed into the boot! I think I might have to drill out the broken bits, then fill the holes, then drill new ones - any suggestions? Thanks for looking
