As long as you're ok with me Jon, that's the main thing (Don't want to miff any one else off on here!) Bike carbs? That'll be a hoot to drive..... Anyhoo, a very small update. My smoked front and side indicators arrived today And I managed to save that breather pipe, thanks to some ally tape: I've also been out and bought some engine degreaser and a 21mm spark plug socket for my 1/2 inch bar

Dodgy looking retro-ish mats for £6? I'll take 'em! (Yes I know I'm doing everything the wrong way round - blame eBay and late nights) I'm going to sob my heart out when the car fails the MOT, as it's as rotten as a pear, aren't I?........Then I'll understand why you lot told me to do the shiny bits last!

Ahhh Mr Generaldogsbody! Progress is looking good, I think you need to get involved in the oily bits next Was hoping to get over to see you at work on 8am Monday, in my lorry, bringing you a few cages of boxes...i'm sure you'll figure out who I am! Unfortunately i'm required elsewhere so maybe another time lol

Hiya, P! How's you? I thought you'd be on here, what with your dodgy car history, an all Oily bits, you say? I normally stick to making making things pretty. I did manage to do an oil change earlier in the week, without killing myself! Are you proud of me? Might have to call you in (alongside most of the forum!) to assist me, when it fails the MOT, or I find more things to bolt onto it! Loving the tinkering at the moment, though. Just wish I could find a cheap set of Gti steelies (with tyres) for it.........The 13s aren't setting my world on fire..... You'll have to rejoin the VW clan, soon enough. You know you want to........

I am indeed on here, its a very informative forum with some interesting posts! And there's nothing wrong with my history i'll have you know! Start with the smaller oily bits and the more in depth things will seem easier, as long as your methodical when attempting stuff its not too bad. Always helps if you have the right tools to complete the job with...a Haynes manual will be your best friend, i've always found it easier to get stuck in then ask for help as if you ask too much beforehand it can put you off and dread doing something easy Golfs are always a good starting point, my first car was a Mk2 3dr in Tornado red...if I can modify one and keep one on the road on a budget at 18 i'm sure you can lol I cant say i'll buy another VW though, i've still got my Estate to fix and my LandRover to get on the road :/ Catch up soon though yeah, 2sugars hahaha

Cheers, P. I'm slowly running through the service. The coolant flange is leaking pretty bad, and I'm putting off replacing it, as I'm scared to break anything, to be fair (Can't find the right part, either!) Maybe sorting out the service, will spur me on to sorting out the coolant flange (as you said, start small......) You're always welcome to come and get your hands dirty! And if you want a brew, when you're on delivery duty, you've only got to ask

Right, the service is now finished (Got the dizzy cap, arm, spark plugs and fuel filter fitted today) Two of the plugs were very black and dusty - is this a bad thing? The car runs much better now 50% of the oil splashed all over the under-bonnet area has been removed (Used a whole can of degreaser - the car must of had a major oil leak) I hope it was from the very brittle rocker cover gasket, which then bunged oil everywhere from the drive belts. All of the air filter box and pipes got reassembled (Even put the smoked front indicators on, whilst I was there!) Cracked the bolts on the coolant flange, but bottled taking it off *Blush* Got the battery out and had a look around that area on the inner wing (I know that Golfs are known to rot there) Seemed pretty good. A few bits of rusts. What's the best paint to "seal" that area with? Started prepping the car for the bodywork. Shouldn't take too long to do (Just sills and bottoms of the doors - managed to get the door trims off, only braking one clip!) Loads of other silly little jobs got sorted, as well............even got my new mats in Not far to go before the MOT. Happy days

Black plugs would indicate rich fuelling if I remember correctly, no idea why it would be on only two cylinders though.. unless they weren't firing well in the past.. This 'coolant flange' is it the thing on the end of the engine which loads of hoses all go into? If so, my mates Polo was leaking from the same place we bodged it up with putty stuff for a bit, not sure if he swapped it out or not in the end, as its currently off the road.. Good luck with it! Get it in for that MOT

Thanks for all the words of encouragement, everyone I've checked around on a few websites, and they're suggesting that the black plugs could be down to a blocked air filter/poor amount of air getting into the engine. Let's hope the service will help in that respect....... And the "coolant flange" is one of these (Not the bottom one, because that's just a joint that goes on the front of the flange): Forgot to note down the engine code when I was with the car yesterday, so don't know which one to order..........doh!

Thanks, Ad. I thought it looked quite tricky to get off, hence why I bottled taking it off

Not much progress with the car in the last few days. Managed to grab the wiper blade arms off it when I was last with the Golf. Finished painting them over the weekend...... It's all the little things (Well, doing the little bits make me feel like things are moving forward.......)
