Can't say I've seen a mk 1 or mk 2 Ford Mondeo's up here in Aberdeenshire in the last year. Was up in Aberdeen with my Mk2 just the other week as well. Also intend to visit the motor museum at Alford soon. A couple of days later on our travels again through Aberdeenshire and beyond we caught a K-reg Sierra, then a 51 Cougar on the west coast. Nearer to home, i may go and look at an M-reg Escort that someone want far too much for on Gumtree. Then this weekend past on a trip to Portsmouth, while my laddie was looking for supercars, i caught some MK1 and 2 Golf GTis and was very surprised to see quite a few Micras, Meganes and even a very nice standard Laguna. While meandering our way home, the only Mondeos were 2 very bad looking Mk2s that should not make another MOT! Was plenty more pre 51 plate cars about as well with most of them looking quite good. All the very best, Geoff.

Yes that kid looks decidedly dodgy. I blame the parents! Thanks for posting that. Is that the same museum that has the SD1 that was restored on channel 4's "for the love of cars"? Sorry to jump in, but the Granny is in the Glasgow Transport museum, the Love of Cars SD1 i think is in the Grampian Transport Museum in Alford.

Hi Strada, If that Mk1 doesnt temp the op, then i wouldnt mind seeing seeing some pics as well! Have an idea that is running through my head that involves the TDCi in my rusty Focus daily. All the very best, Geoff.

Price looks good to me, but if you can find a better one for the same money, i would do what astranaut said.
There lies one good reason to get the work done though as how many Mk1s, never mind estates do you see? Diesel as well!

Disasters... offside arch and sill £560 Nearside arch £360 And cant be done until September!!! Q Is that fitted and painted? You know you now need to go and get a cheap Mondeo to run around in, clean it up until yours is made better then sell it at a profit to help out!

Moderns that wink their fog lights at you when turning a corner! Does it really help or just the gimmick i think it is?
With the OP about the alloys, but don't know if i prefer my Mondeo Turbines digging in or swooshing by!

Similar to smokeem, I'm a 46 yo petrol head that doesnt like driving due to the actions of others! However, i cant bring myself to allow the wife to drive. Always owned manuals until last year when a spares car for the toy turned up, and it was an auto! And one i was soon to find out was running on borrowed time with it being in a Mk2 Mondeo! But all the horror stories never showed and i got a year out of the car.
The car that might have changed my mind was a Mazda 5 i drove in Florida, but the Mondeo i couldnt put my finger on what i didnt like about it until what chaps here have mentioned about being a match to the engine, a 2l in my case. So for me i will be staying manual as i cannot be sure that the next Ford i buy will have a good or economic enough with a matched auto box in it!

Diesel mk5 escort, cant be that many of those around! I believe they have the same 1.8td engine i have in my mk1 mondeo, and in various older fords, if so thats bukletproof. I would say an old mondeo (mk1/2/3), mine (touchwood) has been excellent, or the 405 pug. Currently have a need to replace my daily and have been thinking along the lines of the OP, but i don't need to do lots of miles! The diesel i the have in my daily Focus is indeed the same basic engine that originated as the 1.6 found in the Mk3 Escort, grew to 1.8 and found a turbo along the way then TDCi as well. If you look for one and find an early Mondeo TD and its a good one, pass on the info as i have a nice TDCi that i would love to put in it! As for Mk3 Mondeo TDCi and injector issues, I'm not sure which engine is the worst, but there are 3 or 4 different engines/power and a train of thought that supermarket diesel is a contributing factor. Get one that has lived of proper diesel and you have a gem! My research also mentioned that VAG engines have weak points as well. My vote would be for the 850/V70 though!

Yeah i understand why you ask that. Its mainly that the Golf they have is really rusty and if they drive to Stoke > Manchester its likely to break down... its alright for local trips it seems and somehow keeps scraping through MOTs. My Focus is a 1.4 petrol with 19600 miles on it. I just had a couple of breakdowns lately that happened luckily after had finished the gig. It has an MOT in a couple of weeks and i think its probably going to need a few hundred to get it through. Structural welding, exhaust, tyres etc. I did say to my folks maybe we should just get another one of either car that hasnt been run into the ground. They are very simple! but i just thought maybe we could get something a bit more modern. Taking into account your fathers need to go flying, my father drives a C-max diesel and has no issues fitting all the stuff needed to go flying in the boot! You might manage to get a 2009/10 C-max for the money you mention. I would look further into the miles you think your Focus has done as 2 of mine show 35k, but i know they have done 70/95k thanks to common fault requiring replacement dash. All the very best, Geoff.

I have to ask why you are asking as you have 2 of the best cars in class of their era. There is probably more to your story though, but do you have to replace the 2 moderns? Ive had 2 2004/5 Focus for nearly 5 years and never had an issue too far past consumables and pothole damage. Recently had to get another car and didnt look much further than another 04 Focus.
However, i think you are coming bang up to date for your next car and i couldnt decide out of whats available new/nearly new if i was forced that way, but not Vauxhall!

The reason i joined here was there seemed to be quite a few cars at the older end of where my interest lies and its a wee bit different to the one make forums. The issue i have is that i don't think my 99 Mondeo Ghia X is right for here where my direction is standard barring lowered springs and a spoiler. My 3 daily Focus are no more than 5 years newer and i might be replacing one to play about with it, inspired by what i see on here! I think it would be ripe for an affordable posting! All the very best, Geoff.

jgtr, I think these guys have charged £25 for running a rag over a fluid spill and taking an extended road test! If you are an MOT tester, do you charge for a rag and a tweek?
Having gone to college with part of a years intake of apprentices in my home town, i really didnt want to go to any of their garages! Think i only MOTed 1 car out of my first 6/7, usually going to places my dad trusted. After having to deal with the arrogance of a few who thought they were better qualified than myself, i eventually settled on someplace in another town for years who took time to know you, until their best mechanic decided to go on his own.
Even though I'm quite competent with a socket set, i do very few of the MOT repairs and big jobs these days, but will cover any advisories and all the servicing. Leads to very few advisories each year!

Really don't understand why the Galaxy and its brothers from other mothers gets such a bad rep! We had to get one because of our large family and we had a great time with it. Our was a 2.3, and for the size of vehicle, it was still really good on the fuel! Most common electrical faults i suffered was 2 relay 30s and a broken wire to repair the ns rear door central locking. We did over 70k miles all around the UK which took it to 165k and would have kept it if it wasnt for me damaging it!
Because of grandaughter, i was looking for another and found lots of 1.9tdi around the £1500 mark, some of the last mk2 with low mileage. In the end though, i just bought another Focus.

Thanks for the info mondeogrd always happy to learn, and every day is a school day, so would I be correct in thinking that AVGAS is used in turboprop type planes like Cessnas and whatnot, and Kerosene is used in turbofan type planes like 747's et cetera? Like I said, heating oil was more my forte. Most aircraft the size of Cessnas and Pipers are piston powered and use AVGAS. However, some are modified with Diesel power and run off JET A1 with some new types with that as standard. Ive even fueled a microlite that uses diesel power! The rest use whatever version of AVTUR that they need with i think JET A1 the most common in the UK. All the best, Geoff.

Seems to be quite a few with a £350 car and i can add my nearly retro to that. We nearly spent that on picking it up as well and since, £385 spares car that ive used for 11 month, initial improvement parts and side window weatherstrips another £250+ and service items and 2 MOTs, £400, so i think I'm there! Certain to spend plenty more in improvements year 2!
Thankfully ive changed hobbies but increased another obsession!
Thing is, i seem to have been bitten by a bug as we went and bought a Focus the other day that isnt quite there quality wise, but is a damn good base, and may feature on here in the future.
