Sorry bud! AVGAS (100LL) is petrol and used in most light aircraft, and Kero is related to AVTUR/JET A/JET A1 used in all most of the real aeroplanes! Mixing them up at my level would lead to a serious boot up the erch! Know what you are on about with the viscometer as we use this for testing our de-icer fluids. All the very best, Geoff.

With things like this, i hate to see someone not getting the moneys worth out of stuff! I would be looking around to see what people are looking out for, and if you've catalogued everything and find you have the parts, get it on whatever site you choose and get the money for it! It may take more time and effort, but would be worth it in the end!
When i first read this thread, the 2 shows closest to me that i attend sprung to mind as they have autojumbles as well so i would be looking to attend one a month if you can! Even to browse to get a feel for prices.

Up here in Scotland, it really does look like Retros are quickly disappearing! I do know someone who runs a 90s Mondeo and Volvo estate and there is a Starlet that sits a wee bit down the road from them.
Gonna have a wonder soon with this thread in mind. All the best, Geoff

Started driving in 88 and have had a changeable relationship with cars and dominated by Ford. Hopefully i remember them and get them in the right order.
V 79 MkII Escort 1.3 Van, real heap and traded after 6 months against,. W 81 MkI Fiesta 1.1 L, Best condition car ive had until recently, but 2/3 months, 3 points/£100 and unrelated lamp post - W/O!
After passing test and during a break in car ownership, i used my fathers Alpine and MkIII Ford Escort 1.6D that i loved! I then met my now wife and.....
X 81 Peugeot 305, Ex-Taxi so had its issues, but did us a turn and a few tales to tell! Sold on for spares. Then a run of MkIII Escorts with another 3 as spares that i cant remember how they were all disposed of. W 81 Escort 1.1, had a cobbled together feel and soon got rid of. X 81 Escort 1.3L, upgraded to 5spd and sold on. B 85 Escort 1.3L. B 85 Escort 1.3L 3dr, Served us well and sold to a friend who also had good use out of it. X 81 MkV Cortina 1.6 Carousel, £100 full mot but interior fire damaged, was traded against, C 85 MkI Orion 1.3GL, really wanted one at the time, but i kinda knew it had a story, so when kids came along, it was traded against, J 91 MkV Escort 1.4L, One of my other hobbies started taking me down south with this car, but the first trip:( Had for a good few years, but had to replace a camshaft and gearbox, got bored with it and laid it up for a while to drive, G 89 Sierra Sapphire 2.0DOHC Ghia. One of the best cars that ive driven until someone twoced it and lost control into a wall! The start of a bad run with other drivers! By this time, the Escort had just been MOTed and put back on the road, only to be rear ended 3 days after the above! There was also a Saph 1.8CVH project, but less said! Maw n Paw then handed over, M 95 MkVI Escort 1.8LX 4dr. A wee bump repaired but served us well until it blew a cambelt idler! Should have sorted it instead of scrapping! D 87 MkII Fiesta 1.1L. A car i bought with the intention to make money out of and did! P 97 MkII Mondeo V6 Ghia X, what a car, but not the most reliable and spent a fair amount on it over 2 years including the cursed head gaskets! W/O after someone pulled across me into a side road! Seed planted though! M 94 Renault Savanah, 4 kids now so we had to have 7 seats! A wee bump again repaired, didnt like sitting in traffic, but took us to Ireland twice and was a great car! £400 for a new exhaust and then constant overheating gamble saw it scrapped! R 97 MkI Galaxy 2.3 GLX, Think this was the longest serving car so far and saw us for 70k miles all over the country, including John O Groats and Lands End! High miles and a silly mistake had it lasting one year too long and was traded. In the mean time, S 98 MkII Mondeo 2.0LX, lasted 3 month and W/O while parked in the street! Hopefully no more insurance issues from now! M 95 Rover 214SEi, I loved this car but it ended up rotting in front of us so was scrapped and replaced with, ST51 Mk1.5 Focus LX 1.8TDDi, Loved this car until it started having Focus charging issues! Nursed it along for long enough and would have kept it but traded it, and the Galaxy for the next two, SC53 Focus 1.6 Zetec complete with annoying cabin water leak! KB54 Focus 1.8 LX TDCi. Never had an issue apart from my lazyness with either of these but they now need major services. These make a real mockery of PCP deals!
A year ago, i then made the decision to have a 3rd car as a bit of a toy. T 99 MkII Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X 4dr, Will probably appear on here this spring if i do anything to it. Some parts were not quite right, so i bought a spares car, Y 01 MkII Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X Auto, Its always been a heap of rubbish, more so now that the required parts are swapped, but its currently my daily driver and i think its great to drive! Heavy on fuel in the town though!

One of the reasons i was hooked on this place was threads like this and having just taken 2 days to catch up on this, i realised quite a bit rung true to what I'm aiming for with my car! However, i think over the years of this thread, i think there is a number of scenes mentioned that should be something in their own right. When thinking of Cafe Racers, my first thoughts were not of the bikes, but of the cars that accompanied and raced the bikes that like someone said, took their owners to work on monday!
I'm sure we would all like to go out and emulate some of the sportier cars in this thread, but for some of us, we need to consider a practicallity element when we are permitted to go and get our toys. For me, a British theme is standing beside the sports cars by taking what dad used as a mundane family car and making the most of what you have or turning it into something a bit more exciting, even to an extreme if the skill and knowledge is there. For me, and I'm glad that someone mentioned the next era to be farmed is the 90s and 00s, my car had to be a bit more modern which gave me the problem of the dwindling number of UK manufacturers. However, being a Ford nut since they built cars here, that came to the rescue and previous experience gave me a target.
So i can ensure it qualifies, Cheap, yes. Needed work, yes and still does. Mundane, well its a Mondeo so yes. 90s/00s, 90s yes. Leather, (plastic)wood and other toys, yes. Cheap improvements from newer Fords, some done, more to come. Lowered, yes and handles great. Fast, no but thats not what i want.
For the future, subtle body mods like a spoiler, and some back to standard improvements. If funds allowed, i would go ST170 engine/6 speed box/brakes and alloys. All the very best, Geoff.

The delights of low annual mileage is the tyres will need replaced because of things like this sadly. I'm no expert, but i start to do more regular checks on tyres when the small cracks start, and will never get to the stage that these are at. All the very best, Geoff.

After years having 2 seperate policies, i have funnily enough doubled the number of cars i have and still have 2 policies. Main one is mainly for the wife and daughter, but the second is a multicar policy with Aviva for my Focus and 2 Mondeos. Each car gains its own NCD but I'm paying about £800 that will reduce when i renew next month. All the very best, Geoff.

The Grandstand/BTCC comment got me thinking about this as i believe the Vectra comes from the end of the era of BTCC where i really became interested in motor racing outside of World Rallye and F1. Thing is, i remember the Cavaliers, Lagunas, Primeras, Volvo 850s, and obviously the Mondeo, but vaguely the Vectra. The next Vauxhall i remember is the Astra Coupe which is where the interest is lost again and i have rarely watched BTCC since.
Another thing to consider is how the motoring press reacted to the car when it was released for sale. How many Vauxhalls made it to the top of the standings in any road tests in their class? Cant remember any through the 90s. I can remember a manager of mine at the time of the Vectra being launched, repeating something he heard in that there were 52 new parts different from the Cavalier, and someone piped up, aye, the front and back bumper and the fittings, nuts, bolts and washers to fit them! I also remember Jeremy Clarksons infamous road test of a Vauxhall!
Another thing that i think has hurt Vectras, is those 3 little letters that meant something in the past. As a comparison, my formative driving years were spent looking at Ford XR/RS and Vauxhall SR/GSi and i even had a hankering after a Cavalier SRi. The XRs kinda died off, but then Ford had the RS Cosworth and brought in the ST and RS again. These were all fast cars of their range. For Vauxhall, i hired a Vectra SRi once and quite liked it. However, all it was in this cars case was a trim level, and certainly not a range topping model. I am vaguely aware of the VXRs, but i don't think they are applicable to the Vectra B.
Having said all that, i believe every car has a following and i can see these Vectras having a corner at some shows. But as long as the owners can get them past the rotted rear arches, the Mondeo will be next door with a field to themselves. All the very best, Geoff.

Cant beat a good sized old cantilever box for working off a driveway!
Made an investment in my future as an apprentice and still have the majority of the tools i bought. Another vote for a decent ratchet screwdriver and bits and have supplemented the old Snap ons with their new Soft Grip items. Managed to get a bargain set by stalking Ebay.
Having tried a few different Mole Grips over the years, i cant see past Vise Grip. Also a set of Snap On Lineman pliers have helped me without resorting to vise grips. And if that fails on a nut, some nut splitters!
As for sockets and spanners, i didnt manage to complete the set of 3/8 drive metric stuff before changing career, so have filled the gaps since using Britool and Halfords with a well used Halfords 1/2" drive breaker bar for the stubborn stuff! I also used Facom ratchets which i find really nice to use but easily broken when pushed! All the best, Geoff.

Heading home last week along the A96 east of Keith, i started to catch up on a line of vehicles and thought the truck at the "front" was the cause. You see, for a couple of corners until i reached the tail of the que, the truck was as far as i could see. Then at the front of the que, travelling along at a steady 50mph was one of these! Seeing how rare these are, could this have been this one! Saw it was a P plate as well when i turned off the main road, wallowing as it went after looking quite composed at the head of the line! Geoff.

I would hope your retroish daily would stretch into the early naughties? don't know enough about when DPFs came in, but than again, I'm not so sure they are as dark an art that people believe they are! I do have a DMF in my Diesel Focus though, but not had any issues that i know of as yet. However, i lucked in with a spares car i bought with a nearly new clutch and DMF!
I think going naughty would open up your choice a bit with more cars that could do quite good mpg. Just done an A-road blast across Scotland in my 53 plate 1.6 petrol Focus and think i managed around 50mpg. Not sure that i would have got that out of a 90s Escort! I think an equivalent Astra could better that, and it pains me to say, do look really good lowered with the right wheels.
I know people question how fixable newer cars are, but code readers can be had quite cheaply. I also wonder if every fault can be identified and rectified using the net and a little bit of skill. Geoff.

I'm just wondering if a TDCi out of a Mk1.5 Focus could find its way into a Mondeo? In some ways an easy 25bhp increase and I'm sure would surprise a few cars! Geoff.
