I don't really understand what you are getting at with your concerns. But that does come from a Scottish Lowland dweller. To be honest, i would think that any car would be toast if it hit black ice and the driver was not considering the conditions!
Use google to see what other locals are driving. I just did it and within the first couple of clicks along the road showed a pair of Vitaras and a Forrester. What do her new colleagues drive?
The roads are treated up there and the locals probably walk up the tracks to their customers, not even attempting to get up a dodgy track. All the best, Geoff.

Having bought the car i was after, i seem to have gotten a bit obsessed about what is still out there.
Thing is, i did an MOT history check for my Mondeo, for which there was only a couple of tests recorded online, and still went down and bought it! A couple of clues fell into place at the time, and since, but overall I'm happy in the end.
However, as I'm still looking(WHY?), i still use the history site every other day and i would hate to think how many cars ive discounted throughout the last year! As soon as it says, corrosion within....., I'm off and looking at something else. Another good one is early Focus mileage. Having 2 myself that have had new instrument clusters, the amount of adverts i find with inaccurate mileage claims is unbelievable!
All in its a great tool to use! All the very best, Geoff.

Probably coming in a bit late to this, but a friend of mine recently bought an ST170. He was originally looking for a BMW but turned up one day with a good base for a cracking car. Although I'm firmly a Ford man and own 2 lesser Mk1.5 Focus, the ST170 is most certainly not a car i would purchase.
They like to eat both Lamda sensors and seem to take a regular dislike to their clutch. Saying that, my mate seems to like his now. All the best, Geoff.

It could have had a couple of replacement instrument clusters.
I have a pair of Focus mk1.5 as daily drivers that both show around 35k miles. But i have some service history backed up by checking MOT history and know they are around 64k and 92k. Well known fault on the early Focus was moisture somehow affecting the instrument cluster. I'm looking for another Focus just now and always look for this issue from which ive found a couple with strange MOT history! All the very best, Geoff.

Was under my lowered Mondeo today and found some strange damage to things that hang down. That, the fact one silencer box has been replaced with a dodgy looking pipe and the state of the springs may see me taking it back to standard. Its great on dual carriageways and some A roads, but find a pot hole and it hurts! All the very best, Geoff.

I don't think all Ford diesels should be discounted as some of them can be found in London Taxis and even a high end marque such as a Volvo! If they were really that bad, i doubt they would have been entertained in either of these vehicles.
A bit of research may get the op a nice spec Focus or Mondeo that is a wee bit newer than a similar VAG and might get them a PSA engine powering them about! As for DMFs, there are too many variables, especially the different way people drive, to get a true picture of failure rates. All the very best,

Largely older Mondeos are seen as 'scrapyard fodder' (which is a very accurate way of describing many of them!), but i think this is why the MK1 is now starting to come into it's own as a slightly lesser-spotted retro car - although having said that, they are (even by todays standards) a very modern, easy to live with, reliable car...surely one to watch! Thanks guys, i should have further updates in the next few weeks!
When i got my Mk2 saloon, the very first night coming home from work i followed a Mk1 hatch along the road. Saw it two or three times over that month and not seen it or any other Mk1s again! As for Mk2s, ive never seen a saloon or estate on the road, only 5 hatchbacks and not that I'm counting. One of them was scrapyard fodder and another i now own and will probably be scrapped as well! Cant wait for the updates! All the very best, Geoff.

When i joined this place, i really didnt think that anyone would show up in a Renault 21, never mind a Savanna!
Thanks to a mate in the trade, we came by a 1994 Savanna just when we were due our 4th kid! It had several issues but ran and handled like a dream, unless it was a hot day sitting in traffic. All we had to do to keep it running was wind down the windows and wind the heating up! Someone had tried and failed to bodge fix the cooling fan and i didnt have time to fix it. I'm sure it went through 2 MOTs with no problems and what did for it in the end was a lack of enthusiasm to replace an exhaust at ÂŁ400! We then moved onto a Galaxy but still have some very happy memories of the French piece of...... All the very best.

I got that green light this time last year. Went from a 2 car family to 5 cars!
I am just wondering if your requirements are a bit too mixed? Reading your first few lines i came up with a nicely done Transit or T3/4/5, i even saw what i considered a very nice Connect at the weekend! Anything Yank Pick-up then came from the next lines, then i re-read them and you went too far and I'm now confused! Geoff.

Someone once tried to explain something to me about how tyres behave differently under acceleration load, then coasting and braking load. This was connected to a vibration issue from the front of a Mk3 Escort that turned out to be a very badly warped brake disc! However, a former gaffer tried to convince me it was tyre imbalance across the tread that was causing the vibration that manifests itself more while coasting or under braking. Have had a tyre that suffered from this but too long ago to remember the exact symptoms, but my moneys on the driveshaft/CV Joints, and not only the inners. Also look to see if it has a driveshaft mount on the back of the engine, but i doubt it does. Arabest, Geoff.

I'm in the middle of trying to blame this place for talking me into whats gonna replace my still roadworthy spares car! But i have to ask, do you need to spend as much at a grand to get what you want? More of that later and i hope you can excuse my inability to add in photos and links!
I'm a Ford nut, but still had hankerings after a big number of other makers cars. Having been married a year in 1995, there was plenty i seem to have forgotten most of! One was the VW Corrado in its various forms, but i accept the bigger power examples may be outside the price and insurance questions. I might have also read something about certain spares were an issue. Then the one i really wanted for a while was a Jetta, a Golf with a boot. Even Vauxhall got a look in with the Calibra, Cavalier and Calton/Senator.
So back to spending less than a grand and getting a decent, well if you are Ford inclined, motor that fits into pre-95! I'm gonna add votes for the Escort Mk3 thru 7 as there seems to be some very nice cars available amongst the mediocre to the downright scrappers. Then there is the Granada Mk3 and the Scorpio although they don't seem to be as abundant as i expected just now. A vivid memory i have is of a Mk1 Galaxy 2.3 that was turbo'ed and dropped that i myself would love to revisit!
However, my main candidate would be a 2l Mk1 Mondeo, especially if you can find a 4x4 or 2. See past the Mundane tag that some give them, but get as high a spec as you can, lower it a little and you wont be disappointed!
And for the future, the Cougar, Puma and Ka are just around the corner!

As i don't know where either of you get your figures, i cant say which one of you is correct!
What i can say is, having remembered how i created my figures, i used how many miles i did/year which at the time was 8k miles. At 45mpg i used 809l/year which should see a VED cover of 25p/l. I am now hacked off that its closer to 40p/l on that car and don't fancy working out how much it is over my 4 cars!
And like i said, a big number of zero and cheap to tax VED cars would now be contributing to the pot! All the best, Geoff.

I don't think there would have been much residual cleaner vapour from the previous start up. I just think that the backfire took enough fuel with it to soak the filter and the flame that obviously followed did the rest! Didnt see if you had oiled the filter but petrol has a low flash point and oil quite high, but everything has a point where it will burn!
And anyone who has a dry powder extinguisher, go out and do yourself a favour and check it. If it has a gauge, make sure its in the green and turn the extinguisher upside down a few times and repeat this regularly. All the best, Geoff.

But is it as much as you say? Someone else above creates a lower figure and i have created a midway figure in the past.
Think of all the cars that are zero rated that will start paying through the increase in fuel duty. And consider all these cars that have met the rules and reached a band that they really should not be in. All the best, Geoff.

Was meant to be crossing the border yesterday but decided against it when the weather forecasts said thunder n rain. Living in Scotland, rain aint too much of an issue, but driving 4 hours in it i really couldnt bring myself to do. Nothing booked so no great loss and a crackin pair o storms to watch!
So what did i do? Yes i looked at this thread......
.....then the other one! I then took inspiration in your wramblings and took the wife n youngest 2 for a run to "nowhere" and ended up in Glen Doll! Tell you what, there is nothing Mundane about my Mondeo!
But then i am now wrambling on! My interest here was piqued by your Alpine as it is what i first drove after passing my test way back in 88. My dad an me even re-engined it soon after for some reason (1.2-1.5??) and it did him another wee while. I then see you drive a Mustang which i would love to get one day! Other things you mention i can also relate to, as if i had somewhere to store em like you, i would also have a wee collection! All the best, Geoff.

The only thing i really don't like about VED is double taxing a car! How really hard was it to introduce date to date tax rather than keeping the month to month, if you catch my drift!
But then i thought about it a wee bit more and started to consider how VED for newer cars is set, especially when you look at the way manufacturers get to the figures and how the rules can be interpreted! And seen as ive been thinking about this for a hell of a long time, my mind really started to run away with me! I then considered why someone driving a commuter rocket, pays less VED than my wifes Focus, yet probably does 3-5 times more miles than her a year.
For me, adding a wee bit more duty to fuel at this time is the only way to find a fair way to cover this. In that way, everyone can pay for the way they use their cars and no real need for the SORN system.
