So I'm away from home tonight with work, and in a 30 minute walk from Gatwick up to Horley, I spotted : Definitely a Riley Elf or a Wolseley Hornet, looks pretty far gone, poor little thing.

Here is one i saved mk2 estate 1300l 2 owners from new ziebarted and all 100% original seen ot many many times on the train between headcorn and pluckley parked on a field, on day i finally decided to get in touch, the house was on a busy road with gates always locked, so decided to write a letter, day later i get a call, says it was his sons who doenst want it and if i wanted it come and get it, so i did, spent a few hours faffing about with points carbs ect, and drove it out of the field, it has since gone on to be semi repaired and looking for a new owner had an xr4x4 for company (well a 2x2, back end was lifted for a late saph) think it is still there here is a pic washed with some 4 spokes on there is a few others around, including a breakers with some very old stuff, shall google them or get actual pics when i can

Where is this yard? Am interested in the Polo as looking for carb, or even full engine, depending on what is fitted!

Just had a look at about 20 pages of the thread and feeling a bit philosophical I suffer (as I'm sure many of you do) from an urge to restore old cars/motorbikes but the dream and the reality are two very different things and I'm speaking from experience. The common thread with all these 'abandoned' vehicles is that their owners can't bear to part with them and even with the best intentions will never have them on the road looking good again. Why? Because it 100 times more difficult than you would imagine First thing you need in this country is dry storage. So unless you have a big house with garage attached its Council lock-up!! Better than driveway admittedly but you cannot do anywork inside one as - 1. there is not room to open the doors of the car
- 2. everytime you try to crawl out from under the car or on creeper you hit the wall and it drives you mad
- 3. they usually have no mains electricity supply (or a 24V/32V one)
So....you find a unit. Not easy. It took me about 13 years to find one after endless adverts in papers and visits to estate agents who would take you to view commmercial premises at about £250 a week rent that you could fit about 8 cars in. Nice but only for the very wealthy. I found mine by complete chance when I went to buy a generator off a guy for £300 as I had big plans to restore my Jag in the council lock up powering everything with the generator (compressor/welder/lights etc - yeah right ). It was 14' wide by 30' long You can then start restoring . My unit was 11 miles from my flat and cost £2600 a year to rent and I earned about £1000pm. It can be done but it takes a lot of determination to visit the unit every night straight from work and even more determination if you make the mistake of going home from work for your dinner first. I look back on the 3 or 4 years I did this with horror. Routine was: finish work at 8, home for dinner, nod off, motivate to get to garage 11 miles away whilst howling rain/snow/frost outside and arrive at 11, do a few hours work with 4 layers of clothes on and get home at 3 and sleep in for work next day. Repeat cycle for about 200 days a year. I now have a barn which is nearer and costs the same so cycle is as above but its work, barn, dinner at midnight, bed but still quite a struggle as the barn is quite leaky so you turn up to do some painting or welding and there is moisture streaming down every surface I've got 3 cars and 5 motorbikes in the place and cn't complain about the room and I only work on one project at a time but when MoT time comes or your daily driver needs work that soaks up time spent on the projects. One person only has 24 hours in a day and most of them aren't your own so taking on more than 2 vehicles or one even is probably a bad idea. I'm single too which helps as I can't see how anyone with a girlfriend or wife and/or children could devote more than one day a week to it. I keep a log of all the hours I do on the projects and will one day will count it all up but I would say to do the bodywork on my Jag has taken about 10 months spread work over 5 years and there is still a bit to do. Would I do it again? Yes, once more as I have my Hillman Imp pick-up to do but no matter how tempted I am I don't think I will buy another project. It takes its toll.
