Hi there, my 1.3 Mk1 golf has started randomly cutting out at speed, it cuts for a second or two then fires back up again. The warning light on the temp gauge (which I think is just an oil pressure light) then flashes at me for a few seconds and the car carries on as normal. Anybody more clued up than me know what it might be? I was thinking maybe a fuel pump problem?

On the Auto Union, I was meaning I definitely hadn't seen a modified one, not that that one isn't modded!

This weekend I went to a little show in Cape Town, thought I'd share some of the pics. Auto Union 1000 - Never seen one of these before, certainly not modified - pretty funky if you ask me. Were they ever available in the uk? Sadly doesn't look to be the most powerful of beasts! Bedford van with obligatory 70's styling ideas: "Perana" v8 capri Pretty low Renault Dauphine, I think most have these have rotted away back home in the uk! This Zephr looked like it meant business And finally a little morris 8 I think:

Don't know if this is a repost but the "Roadkill" series from Hot Rod magazine has been keeping me entertained on lonely evenings lately. It's a bit like top gear challenges, only with a hot rod theme and less staged!

Not exactly retro in years, but certainly in design! For any that aren't aware, VW in South Africa kept making the mk1 Golf as a budget car for years, only ceasing production in 2009. They called it the Citi Golf. I'm an Englishman whose just recently moved to SA, I'd always fancied a Mk1 Golf, seemed like a good choice for a cheap car! It's not very old, or very modified, but I think it's kinda cool. It's also the first car I've ever owned with Anti Hi-Jack! Incidentally, SA is a bit of a haven for old cars. Old Mercs are everywhere, as are old vws, cortinas, Mk 2 escorts etc etc. I should get some pictures sometime and upload a few.

Nice! Brings back memories, my Dad had an identical car to this one from new, red, cream leather, red piping. It was such a beautiful car, turned a lot of heads!

Great, really interested in this. I've owned a couple of 1275 midgets, seriously good fun to drive once they've been tuned up a little, I always felt it was the most driving fun you could have below the speed limit! Funny, both of mine got called "money pits" too! I was never brave enough to attempt a full resto though. They also both had chassis legs that were bent in from being jacked up. I think your solution of thicker plate is what MG should have done at the factory!

Cheers, I'd been on the securon webesite already, but not looked hard enough to get the required info. Does seem the stalks will be 15cm too short, which I guess is quite a lot. There's nothing very common with the same set up. Looks like I may have to open my wallet a bit wider....

Does anyone know if mini seat belts will fit a morris minor? It's never had seat belts fitted before, and thought second hand mini ones might be a budget option compared to buying a brand new kit. I can't really see why not, but looking on the MMOC site, they only seem to talk about fitting the special kits which are out of my budget at the mo!
Anybody done any budget seatbelt installations?

I know everyone says this, but I would be seriously considering this if you were a bit further north. It ticks all the boxes - looks cool, plenty of space for stuff, diesel economy and fairly cheap! Good luck with the sale

I've been using rover's for run arounds whilst working on the project car. First one was a 416 cost me £120 but had 4 months tax and test. Had the 4 months then scrapped it and got £90. Nicked the CD player, battery (almost new) and the wheels and tyres (also too good to junk) so I reckon I had my moneys worth there! Went up market on the next one (T reg 214) cost me £307. Also taxed and tested but bodywork is excellent.... was a one owner car before me and the guy died so I bought it off of his son. On this one not too bothered about paying more cos will easy get my £300 back when I'm done with it. People are scared of rovers cos they think that you can't get parts for them so prices on ebay are for nothing. Tim. Seconded, if you can cope with the grandad image. I never would have bought one, but after my old car went bang, a good friend gave me his old rover 420sdi that he was struggling to sell. The car does about 50mpg, has electric everything apart from seats, and has barely cost me anything to run. Only downers are obvious image problems and it's not too exciting to drive, but it's goes ok once the turbo gets going. I think Tim is right about parts driving down prices as people have asked me if I struggle to get bits for it. Which is weird as no-one ever asked me if I struggled to get parts for my old '72 MG??

After running a '95 Peugeot for about 4 years without any maintenance costs really except for usual wear and tear things, I splashed out on a 2000 HDI 306. The car was great to drive but over 2 years cost me well over £1000 in repairs (alternator x 2, fuel pump, auxilary belt damper, abs bits etc) before the (recently fitted) cambelt slipped and the car blew up.
For the past year I've run a '97 rover diesel with 150k on the clock which has never let me down and only cost £150 to get it through the last MOT.
After my experience with the HDI car I've asked more of my friends running newer cars about their repair bills and have heard loads of horror stories of massive repair bills etc.
So my current plan is to run pre 2000 cars for as long as I can!
Basically I was wondering whether anyone here has had similar experiences with newer cars, are they actually less reliable? And are massive repair bills commonplace? discuss...

I'm with you on the need to remove torsion bars for lowering. The problem I found is that loosening off the torsion bars makes the suspension softer. I used to have a lowered mk1 106, the handling was lethal, stiffened springs at the front, softened torsion at the back = unpredictable and sudden oversteer at high speed.
